BUS DRIVER/MAINTENANCE

FT/REGULAR

NE - LEVEL 2

GENERAL DEFINITION: Transports children to and from school at the program. Performs maintenance work of average difficulty in performing minor repairs to the building and grounds. Performs general cleaning and maintenance of facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

DUTIES:

Transports children, staff, and parents to scheduled appointments, service agencies, and field trips.

  • Performs daily pre and post bus inspections and perform routine maintenance on buses.

  • Provides emergency bus evacuation training for children, staff and parents at least twice a year.

  • Plans and develops bus routes for each school year.

  • Implements safety rules to children while transporting them to and from school.

  • Regulates heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.

  • Reports delays or accidents.

  • Complies with applicable traffic regulations.

  • Attends State and National Pupil Transportation Institute to keep up with up-to-date regulatory changes.

  • Maintains record of vehicle maintenance, inspections and reports any problems to Director.

Performs maintenance and repairs.

  • Performs minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repairs as needed in the facilities.

  • Replaces damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall coverings in a timely manner.

  • Installs items such as window shades, venetian blinds, curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks on buildings.

  • Maintains and repairs classroom, kitchen, playground and other equipment to meet safety and health standards.

  • Must be able to operate machinery or equipment used in maintenance work (i.e. cement mixer, power tools, tractor, etc.).

  • Uses the requisition process to make purchases allocated for motor vehicle operations, building and maintenance repairs.

  • Maintains the Safe and Health Standards of the Head Start building and grounds.

Performs janitorial work of the building and classrooms.

  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, vacuums, and buffs floors.

  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles.

  • Washes window & walls, and cleans restrooms.

  • Uses vacuum cleaners, dusts, polishes, and cleans furniture.

  • Performs inventory and maintains stock of sanitary and building supplies.

Responsible for building access and safety of the facilities.

  • Assures that the gates are locked and the buildings are secure, locked, and inaccessible when facilities are not open.

  • Responds to burglar alarm and reports of any building break-ins.

  • Performs visual walk-around inspections of the building and premises after each workday to make sure that the building occupants are safe the next day.

Attends Center Committee meeting and staff meetings as required.

  • Participates in activities to promote and increase parent involvement, including, but not limited to Fatherhood Initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned by the supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to perform custodial/janitorial duties. Ability to safely use equipment and cleaning supplies, paying attention to caution labels and related matters. Some knowledge in minor building maintenance and repair. Ability to use power tools. Must have adequate knowledge in Construction Technology to perform minor electrical, carpentry and plumbing repairs. Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to read, write and maintain simple records directed to transportation and facilities management. Must have knowledge in Bus Transportation Safety. Ability to operate vehicles safely and efficiently. Ability to keep simple records. Must have good driving skills. Knowledge of local Traffic Laws, ordinances, rules and driving courtesies involved in bus operations. Must be able to establish and maintain a good professional relationship with tribal employees, parents and the general public.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED with one (1) year of experience in the areas of public transportation or building maintenance.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus endorsement with no DUI/DWI convictions within the past three (3) years. Or must be able to obtain CDL within a year of employment. Driving is an essential part of the duties.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. Position is Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo a Criminal History/Employment Background Check to comply with P.L. 101-630 The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and P.L. 101-647 Crime Control Act. Must undergo a yearly Physical Examination to include Tuberculin Skin Test.
