Nursing Assistant Emergency Department - Evening/Nights

Location: York Hospital, York, PA

Schedule: Full Time

Full Time: 36 hours/week

Part TIme: Minimum of 24 hours/week

Hours: 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am

Preferred hours of availability 3pm-3am or 7pm-7am

Every 3rd weekend and holiday rotation required

Emergency Department (ED)is a 54- bed department within York Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Accredited Center of Excellence. In addition to the 54 treatment spaces, we have a 3-bed trauma bay and secure unit for behavioral health patients.

General Summary

Provides clinical support services to patient care staff by performing a variety of duties related to patient care. Takes patient vital signs, assists patients with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, feeding, toileting, etc.), inventories and replenishes supplies and equipment, and performs special assigned and or delegated duties such as performing EKGs, Point-of-Care testing, phlebotomy and splinting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens, toileting and positioning.

  • Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests, procedures, etc.

  • Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the Registered Nurse.

  • Documentation in ECare pain scale, input and output, removing foley catheters, vital signs and reports abnormal values to the RN. Collects specimens such as blood, urine or sputum using approved techniques and procedures. Obtains and documents temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration, pulse and pulse oxygen. Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals.

  • Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.

  • Performs EKGs and/or Point-of-Care testing which may include blood glucose, hemocult and specific gravity testing. Reports glucose to RN.

  • Runs special errands as required. Responds to call lights.

  • Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, supply carts, etc. are stocked with appropriate items at required levels.

  • Maintains par levels of supplies in the Emergency Department..

  • Applies splints and immobilization devices and outfits patients with crutches.

  • Maintains a visible presence in the Emergency Department between tasks.

  • Establishes a rapport with EMS providers, assists RN and EMS with initial patient contact and care upon arrival to ED bed and directs EMTs and Paramedics to RN for transfer of care reporting.

  • Caring is demonstrated through spiritual, physical, emotional, psychosocial and cultural responsiveness, and is integrated into the plan of care.

Common Expectations:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).

  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.

  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

  • Less than 1 year As a Nursing Assistant, EMT or a Nursing Student. Required

Licenses:

  • Heartsaver CPR/AED Upon Hire Required

  • Certified Nurse Aide Upon Hire Preferred
