University of Virginia Instructor/Nursing Student Support Specialist in Wise, Virginia

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invites applicants to apply for an Instructor/Nursing Student Support Specialist in the Department of Nursing. This is a 9-month position responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating activities related to student success and teaching a 2/2 load (primarily clinical). The Nursing Student Support Specialist will collaborate with faculty, the Department Chair, and Academic Support Services staff.

Specific Responsibilities include:

· Early identification of at-risk students, development and oversight of strategies to promote student success with NCLEX on the first attempt.

· Meet with at-risk students on a regular basis to support learning and provide techniques for more effective learning, studying, test-taking, note-taking, stress, and time management.

· Regular follow-up with all students who receive a B- or below in any course that has a clinical co-requisite.

· On-going monitoring of ATI exam scores, faculty developed test grades.

· Collecting data on ATI exam scores, faculty developed test scores and other issues relating to student success.

· Work closely with faculty advisors of at-risk students in implementation of a remediation plan.

· Collaborate with Academic Support Services and Counseling Services on testing, dealing with anxiety and the development and oversight of remediation activities.

· Advising the Department Chair and faculty on resources needed to promote NCLEX success.

· Supporting graduates of UVA Wise nursing program who have been unsuccessful in passing the NCLEX licensure exam.

· Participate in Department of Nursing meetings, advisory council, and committee work across the college.

· Participate in the programmatic curriculum development and evaluation to meet accreditation standards.

· Teach 2/2 workload (primarily clinical courses).

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:

Education & Experience

· Earned master’s in nursing required, doctorate in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning; preferred.

· Teaching experience with diverse students at the baccalaureate or higher degree level; preferred.

· Unencumber Virginia registered nurse license or eligible for licensure in Virginia, or a multistate license.

· Experience in test-writing and analysis and in the preparation of students for NCLEX preferred.

· Programmatic experience with advising, academic support services, and working with diverse students preferred.

Skills & Abilities

· Excellent written and oral communication.

· High level of organizational skills.

· Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.

· Skills in student engagement, planning and evaluation, and student and faculty mentoring strongly preferred.

· Function effectively both as a member of a team and independently.

· Candidates must have a clear understanding of UVA Wise’s public liberal arts mission.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is combination teaching clinical and office work with students involving extensive use of desktop computer. The job requires regular travel some distance to go to clinical, attend meetings, and educational programs.
