GE Vernova Senior Engineer – Advanced Reactor Physics Methods and Core Design (Remote Eligible, U.S.) in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

This role contributes to company objectives in the fields of advanced reactor nuclear physics methods, core design, and associated technologies. This role is intended for a current subject matter expert in the areas of multi-group cross section generation, full-core simulation, core monitoring, software development/maintenance. It integrates and develops advanced nuclear technologies, application methodologies, and supporting processes that meet business needs across the organization. This includes software development, documentation and validation, user training, and customer interfacing.

This role is within the Advanced Design & Development team, which is responsible for the development, maintenance, analytics, and technical consultation of engineering computer codes, correlations, methodologies, and new fuel and core designs related to new and advanced reactor types, with a special focus on the Natrium Demonstration Reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading the technical development, accuracy and uncertainty qualification, testing, verification, regulatory licensing, and maintenance of analytical methods required for evaluation of steady-state and transient core/fuel performance of nuclear reactors.

  • Work within an approved regulatory framework for nuclear software quality assurance for engineering computer programs.

  • Prepare, document and present technical data to internal and external customers.

  • Be responsible for the maintenance and/or development of key nuclear and thermal-hydraulic analysis codes.

  • Lead team process improvements to drive speed and simplification.

  • Communicate with internal/external users of the methods through support, documentation, and training.

  • Ensure work is performed with high quality in accordance with NRC rules and regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards.

  • Drive a team culture based on teamwork, integrity, candor, transparency, and execution on commitments.

  • Motivated to push the state-of-the-art for advanced reactor methodologies used in industry.

  • Effectively communicate and coordinate activities with other team members on engineering/technical issues.

  • Assist and provide support to the team technical leader and functional manager to plan, status and execute projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university or college in nuclear engineering or a closely related technical discipline AND minimum of 6 years of experience in nuclear methods development/neutron transport/lattice physics/nuclear cross section generation

  • ORPh.D. from an accredited university or college in nuclear engineering or a closely related technical discipline with a thesis in nuclear methods development/neutron transport/lattice physics/nuclear cross section generation AND minimum of 4 years of experience in some combination of these topical areas

Eligibility Requirements

  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters in Wilmington, NC; but highly qualified (US based) remote candidates will be considered.

Desired Characteristics

  • Prior experience with lattice physics and 3D core simulator codes

  • Prior experience with neutronic methods (OpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, PARTISN, MC2-3, DIF3D), including development of related codes and tools

  • Programming experience with Fortran or C/C++ and Python.

  • Experience with software Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) in accordance with NQA-1.

  • Working knowledge of nuclear reactor core licensing, technical specifications, safety margin bases, code methodology licensing, and related federal regulations.

  • Publication of technical articles and/or patent applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions with speed and accuracy based on the best available information.

  • Exceptional organization skills.

  • Legacy of delivering on commitments; tenacious, with a proven track record of overcoming obstacles; ability to achieve stretch targets.

  • Strong external focus; clear and demonstrated understanding of nuclear industry and/or energy industry.

The base pay range for this position is $120k-160k. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 9/13/2024.

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
