GE Vernova Lead Process Development Manufacturing Engineer – Natrium in Wilmington, North Carolina

This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a as we implement a new, next generation nuclear fuel manufacturing facility. As a Lead Process Engineer, you will be accountable for technical processes and equipment in the development and production of Natrium High Assay Low Enriched (HALEU) metallic nuclear fuel for the Global Nuclear Fuel - Americas (GNF-A) business.

The Natrium Fuel Facility will be built at GNF-A’s existing plant site near Wilmington, NC. The facility is funded by TerraPower and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ADRP).

You will participate in equipment design, process development and manufacturing plan implementation for the production of HALEU metallic fuel to be used in the Natrium Sodium Fast Reactor.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Embrace Global Nuclear Fuel’s nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security, and quality.

  • Responsible for manufacturing processes including process development and definition for assigned projects.

  • Collaboratively develop process solutions to ensure robust, compliant, efficient designs for new manufacturing capability.

  • Understand product design requirements and participate in design for manufacturing optimization with product designers.

  • Develop and execute test plans to advance manufacturing readiness level.

  • Maintain a detailed engineering log of development activities and their progression into production.

  • Manage and coordinate work with vendors for equipment.

  • Develop material and lead multi-discipline design reviews.

  • Oversee and participate in assembly, installation, and testing of processing equipment in the pre-production development space.

  • Manage the transition from development into production implementation, including personnel training, procedure generation, testing, equipment and process qualification and production support.

Required Qualifications

  • 4-Year Technical Degree in Engineering, Materials, Chemistry or equivalent technical discipline from an accredited university; OR Associates Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline with at least 10 years of experience in design and development of manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • 6 years of experience with technical engineering work scope.

  • 2 years of experience in industrial process design or equipment design.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Walk up and down stairs. Occasionally climb ladders.

  • Standing, crawling, kneeling, crouching, reaching around manufacturing equipment.

  • Ability to use computers. Frequent use of computer equipment.

  • Assembly of equipment, operation of hand tools, lifting up to 20 lbs.

  • Must be able to relocate to Wilmington, NC and work on-site as required.

Desired Characteristics

  • MS degree in Science or Engineering.

  • 2 years of experience in nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear operations or other regulated industry.

  • Demonstrated experience in equipment design, development, and implementation in a high consequence, high value manufacturing processes.

  • Understanding of mechanical systems. Strong mechanical aptitude and process engineering skills.

  • Experience with manufacturing and/or metal processing and handling. (Machining, Welding, Casting, Extrusion, Additive Manufacturing, etc.)

  • Familiar with operation, troubleshooting and application of industrial equipment and processes such as resistance pressure welders, motors, valves, gears, mixing, heating, cooling, chemical reactions, furnaces, heat exchangers, hoods, vibrators, hydraulics etc.

  • Experience with manufacturing equipment design, specification, requisitioning, testing and installation, including management of capital and expense projects.

  • Experience with NRC Regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) or Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA).

  • Proficiency with PC and productivity software [examples include MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint].

  • Strong interpersonal and technical leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, scheduling, coordinating tasks, and success working on cross-functional teams.

  • Precision and attention to detail to ensure accuracy in design specifications and manufacturing processes.

  • Capability to work independently on design tasks as well as collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Certification.
