Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Academic Coordinator position will provide academic support and services to student-athletes on an assigned caseload. This position will advise student-athletes and monitor academic progress and

NCAA athletic eligibility of assigned student-athletes. This work involves effective communication, collaboration, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders. It is imperative this position identifies and understands student-athlete's academic needs and can build and maintain effective relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff, and faculty while adhering to all institutional,

CAA, and

NCAA rules and regulations. Academic Coordinator:

  • Serve as the primary contact and athletic Academic Coordinator for assigned sports programs. Responsible for overseeing the implementation of academic plans while monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes in assigned sports programs.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for undeclared student-athletes under the direction of University College through major declaration; serve as a secondary academic advisor for assigned student-athletes upon major declaration and through graduation.
  • Calculate NCAA continuing eligibility numbers for an assigned caseload of student-athletes, including evaluations of prospective transfer student-athletes.
  • In collaboration with the coaching staff, conduct weekly focus meetings with designated student-athletes from the caseload of sports teams.
  • Communicate regularly with coaches, faculty, and ad inistration on student-athletes academic progress.
  • Provide detailed reports to appropriate personnel on individual student-athlete needs and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Conduct new student orientation by presenting material to incoming student-athletes and non-athletes regarding course selections and general University advisement.
  • Conduct academic information sessions for prospective student-athletes during official and unofficial visits to campus for assigned sports programs.
  • Act as a resource for regular accessibility for Athletic Department stakeholders.
  • Assist in the general oversight of study hall and tutorial services.
  • Provide a student-centered approach to learning.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping and protect confidential materials.
  • Assist with SASS tutoring operations, study hall monitor supervision, and special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additionally, this position will occasionally be required to work nights and weekends.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Education, Counseling, Sports Administration, or related field.
  • Experience in education or a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist at-risk student-athletes in an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of NCAA continuing eligibility, CAA, and university rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques, and student skill development.
  • Familiarity with FERPA guidelines.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree with 1-3 years of experience in athletic academic advising.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and process confidential information with the utmost discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to build trust and strong professional interpersonal relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and university personnel.
  • Have a student-centered approach to learning.
