Position Title: Apprentice Mechanic/Operator (DOT-FMCSA-CDL)

Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of all Transmission System Maintenance (TSM) vehicles, mobile equipment, specialized equipment, and tools. This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist journeyman in operating and maintaining equipment.

  • Operate all TSM associated equipment including truck-tractor combination (oversized/overweight loads), specialized line tension equipment, cranes, digger derricks, and insulated and non-insulated aerial lift devices in close proximity to other personnel and energized electrical equipment.

  • Complete routine preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and inspections of vehicles and equipment.

  • Custom metal fabrication.

  • Custom truck fabrication and repairs.

  • Repair hydraulic and electrical problems incurred on assigned units.

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

  • Prepare paperwork, such as maintenance request forms, material charge outs, driver's logs, etc. accurately to ensure proper records are maintained.

  • Assist other work groups with work tasks, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years old which allows operation of a commercial motor vehicle across state lines.

  • Two-year degree in a diesel or automotive mechanic trade school program; OR

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and four years of experience with an accredited Mechanic Apprenticeship program including Journeyman status.

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of gas and diesel equipment, tools, and test equipment; and a mechanical aptitude.

  • Able to read, write, and follow instructions.

  • A class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes and no CDL restrictions other than a medical variance (V), including the following endorsements: liquid or gaseous materials / tanker (N), and hazardous materials (H) or combination tanker/hazmat (X), which requires the successful completion of an FBI background check post-offer. If the incumbent does not have a CDL, after six months in the position, the incumbent will be required to complete CDL theory, obtain a CDL permit, complete Behind the Wheel, and obtain a passing grade on the CDL test by the end of the first year of employment. This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) (FMCSA) (CDL) qualified position.

  • Must have or be willing to obtain within one year from date of hire, a National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operator (NCCCO), telescopic boom cranes-swing cab (TLL), articulating boom crane operator (ABC) and articulating boom crane with winch operator (ABW) certifications.

  • Must complete the apprentice training program within the first four years of employment to obtain the qualifications necessary to be a mechanic/operator journeyman.

  • A valid driver’s license.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

This position requires continuous walking, sitting, standing, frequent bending/reaching, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and carrying/lifting up to 50 pounds. This position is continuously exposed to dirt and dust; frequently exposed to extreme heat, fumes, chemicals, vibration, cold, inclement weather, noise, poor ventilation, and electrical risks. The incumbent will also be required to work in confined areas, and at heights up to 300 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. The harness rating is usually 300 lbs., including tools, clothing, and the individual. This position requires good hearing and vision. Equipment and tools operated include forklift, crane, scissor lift, hoist, come along, sling, jack hammer, machine cutting tools, ironworker, welding equipment, oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, drill press, hand tools, saw, drill, sander, impact wrench, and hydraulic, pneumatic and measuring tools. Requires the ability to repair equipment under pressure due to time constraints such as outages, etc.

Wage : $47.94 per hour
