Distinguishing Features of Work

The City of Wichita Public Works and Utilities department is the largest public utility in the State of Kansas.\ \ This leadership role of Senior Assistant Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of streets and public transportation infrastructure which is accomplished through a number of efforts, including street maintenance, traffic control and sign maintenance, pavement cleaning, street lighting, and emergency response, most frequently snow and ice removal.\ \ Service areas include over 5,100 lanes miles of paved streets, 368 vehicular bridges, over 50,000 street signs, 429 signalized intersections, and over 27,000 street lights. Services are provided by 145 employees supported by a \$21.1 million annual budget. Examples of Work Performed

  • Directs and coordinates operations and maintenance activities related to landfill, traffic control maintenance, street cleaning, street and bridge maintenance, snow and ice removal and infrastructure management systems.
  • Prioritizes the installation and maintenance of signs, signals, pavement markings, and parking meters.
  • Evaluates signal, signing and marking plans prepared by KDOT, consultants and the Engineering Division.
  • Inspects streets and public rights-of-way to ensure that they are maintained in accordance with City standards and policies.
  • Develops budgets and monitors expenditures.
  • Meets and confers with officials from regulatory agencies, such as Corps of Engineers, Kansas Department of Health and Education, Kansas Department of Transportation, and with consultants employed by the City.
  • Reviews products and prepares specifications for purchase.
  • Directs the development and administration of safety activities among employees.
  • Coordinates emergency response activities of the Maintenance Division.
  • Assumes responsibilities of supervisor in his/her absence.

Requirements of Work

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques involved in traffic operations and maintenance, landfill, street cleaning, snow and ice removal, drainage, and street and bridge maintenance activities
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles related to pavement and bridge maintenance and construction and maintenance
  • Considerable knowledge of the City\'s budgeting and estimating principles and practices in order to develop detailed operating, capital and contractual budgets of division
  • Considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws related to the work
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature and recent developments in the field of civil engineering
  • Ability to analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical data and to develop and prepare reports and specifications
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information
  • Ability to conduct detailed technical studies and prepare corresponding written reports
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with building construction sites
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace

Required Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • Graduation from a four-year college with a bachelor\'s degree in engineering that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in construction, design and/or operations engineering work.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license, or registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of Kansas within one year of hiring.
  • Valid driver\'s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

Applicants with experience in government (municipal) engineering.
