Distinguishing Features of Work

This is work in the maintenance of grounds and facilities at a golf course. A supervisor assigns responsibilities, but the employee performs work independently and occasionally supervises a small group of workers in routine tasks.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Operates tractors, trucks, power mowers, aerators, top dressers, and other turf maintenance equipment.
  • Irrigates, fertilizes, and applies pesticides to turf.
  • Plants grass seed and makes sod repairs to golf course playing areas.
  • Maintains sand traps, banks of ponds and creeks, and other hazards on the course.
  • Makes periodic changes of putting green cups and tee markers and services ball washers.
  • Performs lubrication, sharpening, and minor repair services to mowers and turf-related equipment.
  • Repairs benches, barriers, bridges, paths, and other furnishings on the golf course.

Requirements of Work
  • Considerable knowledge of the use and maintenance of equipment such as mowers, sprayers, tractors, pumps and irrigating equipment, and other tools and equipment required in the care and maintenance of golf courses.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in developing and maintaining golf greens, fairways, landscaping, and structures at the golf course.
  • Ability to operate trucks, tractors, trucksters, and mowers requiring the simultaneous operation and control of throttle, brake, steering transmission, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Ability to operate hand held mechanical equipment such as chain saws, string trimmers, circular saws, sod cutters, drills, edger\'s, push mowers, blowers, pruners, and other types of equipment.
  • Ability to operate hand held, non-mechanical equipment such as rakes, hoes, shovels, cup changers, hammers, wrenches, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, pruners, grease guns, painting equipment, and other tools of this type.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle which has a clutch, brake, transmission, and steering wheel that must be operated simultaneously with both manual and pedal controls.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, pavement construction and windy conditions.
  • Ability to safely and effectively swing a 20-pound sledgehammer against brick, concrete or similar substances.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 150 pounds with the assistance of another.
  • Ability to pull, shove, otherwise maneuver items weighting up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to be continuously performing tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment, bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of an eight hour shift.
  • Ability to inspect areas overhead in shrubs and trees.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class B commercial driver\'s license (CDL).
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • 1 y ear of experience operating hand-held mechanical equipment such as chain saws, string trimmers, circular saws, sod cutters, drills, edgers, push mowers, blowers, pruners, and other types of equipment required.

  • 6 months of experience operating trucks, tractors, trucksters, mowers, golf carts, and other vehicles required.

  • Must be able to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 90 pounds.

  • A valid driver\'s license is required.

  • Six months of experience in golf course grounds maintenance preferred.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

\ Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
