Fluid Management, Inc. is one of the local businesses at IDEX. At Fluid Management, Inc., we are the leading global manufacturer of precision dispensing equipment for the architectural paint and coatings industry. We have a manufacturing facility in Wheeling, IL.

SUMMARY OF PRIMARY FUNCTION

We are seeking a motivated Engineering Intern to lead a project focused on characterizing the performance envelope of a non-Newtonian fluid pumping system. This hands-on role provides the opportunity to apply engineering fundamentals, data analysis, and problem-solving skills in pumping system, fluid dynamics and related fields. The intern will design and execute experiments, analyze performance metrics, and contribute to optimizing pump design and operation.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and execute a structured test program to evaluate pump performance under various fluid properties, flow conditions, and system constraints.

  • Characterize flow behavior, pressure response, and efficiency metrics across different non-Newtonian fluids (e.g., shear-thinning, shear-thickening, viscoelastic fluids).

  • Develop test protocols to measure parameters such as viscosity variations, shear rates, cavitation risk, and system response.

  • Collect, process, and analyze experimental data to identify trends and define the performance envelope.

  • Compare experimental results to theoretical models and validate or refine system performance predictions.

  • Document findings in technical reports and presentations, summarizing key performance characteristics, limitations, and optimization opportunities.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams, including mechanical, fluid dynamics, and controls engineers, to interpret results and support design improvements.

  • Assist in the design, simulation and Analysis of fluid systems.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, or a related field.

  • Experience with data acquisition, experimental design, and instrumentation.

  • Ability to analyze complex data sets using Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools.

  • Thermodynamics- Understanding energy transfer within fluid systems.

  • Hands-on experience with pump testing, rheology measurements, or lab instrumentation.

  • Familiarity with CFD modeling, LabVIEW, or control systems.

  • Previous experience in an R&D, testing, or experimental setup environment preferred.

  • Understanding of fluid dynamics, pump systems, and non-Newtonian fluid behavior preferred.

Total Rewards

The starting compensation for this position is $20.00 per hour. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
