U.S. Military Academy Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) in West Point, New York

Summary About the Position: Serves as a Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) with the Office of the Commandant of Cadets, Department of Physical Education, West Point, NY., managing the daily operations of the United States Military Academy Fitness Center. Responsibilities Work with fitness facility users to ensure the equipment is being used in a safe and effective manner. Provide guidance on individual fitness programs to meet the users desired needs and goals. Conduct daily inspections of the fitness facilities to identify sanitation or maintenance problems. Ensure the security of the fitness center at all times. Perform lifeguard duties, to include rescues and first aid, at indoor swimming pool. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 General and Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with recreational programs/activities, lifeguard duties, AND six months of specialized experience which includes 1) Experience preparing and leading activities in a recreational setting, such as a school, community center, or other type of public or private recreation program; 2) Assisting fitness center/recreational facilities patrons in the use of exercise/recreation tools, equipment, or materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03) OR Education: Successful completion of 2 years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-5 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting fitness center/recreational facilities patrons in the use of exercise/recreation tools, equipment, or materials; 2) Performing access control such as screening visitors; 3) assisting with or performing basic maintenance or repair on fitness/recreational equipment; and 4) using office automation tools and/or equipment (e.g., computers, copiers, tablets, fax machines, and scanners) to enter/retrieve information or create documents/reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to Detail Client Orientation Problem Solving Teaching Others Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
