The Staff R&D Engineer, Animal Health, will lead the design and development of new implants and instrumentation and/or support in-market products through their product life-cycle within multiple multi-functional project teams. This includes communication with surgeons and sales consultants, understanding of clinical issues, defining the design parameters, and ensuring the correct product is provided to the customer. Positions at this level are considered subject matter experts. They are coordinating all functions of a team, providing leadership and guidance to the individual team members. These positions may act as team lead and are project accountable. Individuals in these positions frequently have significant amounts of critical organizational knowledge.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical leader and project leader, as a member of a multi-functional project core team (marketing, manufacturing, quality, testing, supply chain etc.)

  • Lead responsibility to define user needs, design inputs, new surgical techniques, generate design concepts and prototypes, perform meaningful and timely design evaluations (such as tolerance analysis, FEA, simulated use testing, dry labs and wet tissue labs etc.), and oversee generation of documentation of clinical and surgical technique observations to create meaningful design solutions

  • Oversee manufacturing engineering and/or suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and assembly to produce functioning prototypes and supporting production documentation

  • Understands and follows the Veterinary New Product Development process accurately and maintains high quality design validation and verifications

  • Ensure comprehensive IP and broad patent coverage for strategic projects and new technologies

  • Recognized as a leader on projects and assignments

  • Design and implement mechanical tests and scientific experiments, present data and conclusions with appropriate analysis and write technical reports

  • Serve as designated independent engineer within the department and for other groups and departments for design reviews and technology transfer

  • Gives professional presentations in front of surgeons and sales consultants and oversees discussions of surgeons (e. g. in expert groups or surgeons' labs)

  • Participates in the development of launch educational materials

  • Stays ahead of competitive devices, latest research and technologies through interactions with customers, attendance at industry meetings, and review of medical journals

  • Plans and implements surgeon educational labs and seminars. Coordinates with surgeons, Regional Equipment, CED, and venue representatives for successful outcomes

  • Support sales and provide technical expertise at booths and other Veterinary sponsored events

  • Be responsive to technical requests from customers and sales consultants

  • Lead role in complaint investigations and field investigation activities in support of patient/customer safety

  • Performs other special projects and functions as assigned

  • Know and follow all laws and policies that apply to one's job, and maintain the highest levels of integrity, ethics and compliance at all times

  • Diligently participate in our compliance program-related activities as denoted by your supervisor or our Chief Compliance Officer

  • This position may require up to 20% travel

Qualifications

Required:

  • A minimum of six years of experience in the design and development of medical devices, mechanical products, or biomechanical systems, including multi-component systems

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent required. A Master’s degree preferred.

  • Strong experience with CAD software (Pro-E, Creo, Solidworks, etc.)

  • Experience in identifying user needs (VOC), medical device design principles, material selection, ability to verify and validate design concepts, and understand design failure modes

  • Proven understanding of different types of manufacturing, mechanisms, materials, accurate tolerancing, drafting standards, statistical methods, and GD&T

  • Must demonstrate a strong initiative and follow through in executing project responsibilities, overcoming obstacles and balancing multiple priorities effectively through strong technical and/or project leadership experience

  • Must be able to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals, surgeons, customers and/ or teams, and work effectively as a multifaceted technical and project leader

  • Must thrive in a dynamic, fast paced environment and be able to handle several projects concurrently

  • A successful track record of leading and influencing others without authority, leading multi-functional teams and proven negotiating skills to bring products from concept to launch is required

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Travel required not to exceed 25%

Preferred:

  • Experience in medical device (human or animal health) industry

  • Strong communication and interaction skills, with the ability to collaborate with surgeons and sales/marketing personnel

  • Utilization of Project Management Excellence, Design Excellence, and Process Excellence tools

  • Possess strong organizational skills to support all aspects of the project management functions including scope definition, budgeting, and contingency planning

  • Demonstrated creative design ability

This job posting is anticipated to close on January 6, 2025 the company may however extend this time-period.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $ 105,000 to $160,000. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

o Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
