Summary:

  • Responsible for Management and Nursing Leadership oversight for the Labor & Delivery Unit. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives. Responsible for the day to day operations of the department in an efficient and cost effective manner. The clinical manager will work collaboratively with other hospital services, medical staff, and administration to ensure that quality patient care is delivered. Actively supervises the quality of care delivered to patients and participates in departmental QC and performance improvement activities. This position may rarely include an intermittent clinical component.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Supervises and Manages the Labor & Delivery Department staff. Conducts all activities relating to the hiring, orienting and assessment of newly hired Labor & Delivery Services Staff in conjunction with the Nursing staff development program. Observes and maintains records of staff competency at least yearly and conducts all probationary and annual appraisals in a timely manner per hospital policy. Organizes and coordinates the daily services of the departments. Sets appropriate priorities, uses time effectively. Develops implements and enforces departmental policies and procedures that guide and support the provisions of services. Demonstrates financial accountability. Provides input on cost savings and productivity enhancements. Communicates regularly with staff on progress toward defined goals/required results. Is open to suggestions and new ideas from staff. Provides specific feedback, coaching and corrective action when necessary. Exemplifies superior customer service skills and performs service recovery when appropriate. Attends all management meetings and shares information with staff through regularly scheduled departmental meetings and other methods of communication. Fosters teamwork among staff. Engage employees in the decision making process when appropriate and values diversity. Demonstrates a collaborative and supportive alignment with the Department Director toward unit goals and initiatives.Professional Role Development Develops own nursing knowledge via practice, observation, professional literature, networking and attending continuing education programs. Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care and the profession of nursing. Promotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment. Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new employees. Mentors student nurses, staff, and Charge Nurses. Accepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of change. Demonstrates verbal and writing skills that are appropriate for healthcare communication. Adheres to the Department of Nursing Dress Code.Department of Nursing and Organization Support Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees. Communicates support of organizational values and strategies. Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet®, iCare Values, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils, and integrates their standards into clinical practice and other program as they develop. Reviews nursing quality data, e.g. NDNQI and identifies how to apply best practice into own practice and mentor others towards meeting quality target goals. Maintains attendance/lateness standards in accordance with Hospital policy.Departmental Support Ensures that equipment is maintained in working order and of sufficient quantity for patient care. Uses equipment appropriately, follows Department policies for equipment and supply use and maintenance. Performs assigned duties to maintain unit in a state of survey readiness and maintain quality initiatives. For example, quality control measures, emergency equipment checks, medication preparation area cleanliness, etc. Facilitates staff meetings on a regular basis. Keeps patient care area and work environment neat and organized.Clinical Practice Provides age appropriate care for the population served. Uses appropriate resources for patients with special needs such as language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, cultural and religious needs. Ensures attention to patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional well being. Demonstrates competency in assessment skills. Performs pain assessments and intervenes to optimally meet patient’s needs for comfort. Performs clinical care in accordance with policy and procedure. Performs peripheral venipuncture and peripheral and central vascular access care according to policy & procedure. Identifies situations that warrant patient rescue and takes appropriate action, e.g. Rapid Response or Code Blue. Adheres to the 5 rights of medication administration and uses the Medication Administration Check (MAK) system per policy and procedure. Integrates principles of infection control & infection prevention into practice. Adheres to aseptic technique as appropriate. Uses resources and references for reviewing policies and procedures, medications, and clinical information. Prioritizes and organizes work effectively within assigned shift.

Credentials:

  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)

  • Maternal Child Experience preferred and 3+ years Labor & Delivery bedside experience and Prior management or charge RN experience in a Labor & Delivery Unit environment

  • Master of Arts or Science(preferred)
