Open Position
Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Per Diem Substitutes (Posting Number 2425-3072)
Location: District Wide
Start Date: As needed
We strongly welcome candidates with the following qualifications:
Must have a current NYS license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
BLS for healthcare professionals certification or ARC current certification
Minimum three (3) years of hospital, outpatient clinic/office or Emergency Room experience
Possess knowledge of emergency care in injury and illness, injury/illness triage and treatment skills
Be able to dispense medication safely
Pediatric/adolescent experience preferred, Computer skills highly desirable
Primary Responsibilities:
Sub LPN to serve as a backup for contract LPN’s that are out sick.
Sub LPN to serve as a backup for parochial schools health office LPN’s that are out sick
Serve as an LPN on a field trip at one of our schools.
Job Description: Per Diem Substitute LPN
Accountability
The substitute LPN reports directly to the District Nurse Coordinator under the general direction of the school physician and the district appointed administrator.
Nature of the Position
The substitute LPN performs a variety of duties necessary for the efficient operation of a school’s health services under the direction of the Nurse Coordinator, Flex Nurse and/or School Nurse. These duties include, but are not limited to, maintenance of cumulative health records, administration of first aid and emergency care for ill or injured students, vision and hearing screenings, medication administration and documentation, and accompanying classes on field trips. The LPN may also sub for a consultant 1:1 LPN assigned to medically frail students during the school day. This may or may not include riding the school bus to and from the student’s home. The substitute LPN performs her/his duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the New York State Nurse Practice Act, and other federal, state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice as set forth by the New York State Health and Education Departments. The substitute LPN adheres to school district policies, regulations and practices and is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Coordinator.

Qualifications
Holds a current license and registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse granted by New York State Education Department.
Holds current certification in CPR-AED for Healthcare Professionals
Demonstrates broad knowledge of health related issues in school age children. Demonstrates adequate proficiency in computer skills including but not limited to electronic medical records, email use, word processing and spreadsheet use.
Communicates and works well with students, teachers, parents, staff and others in the community.
Successfully carries out the medical orders and procedures prescribed by the healthcare provider as well as Individual Health Plans written by the RN. Clarifies questions related to those orders as they arise.
Demonstrates good observational skills, mental alertness, initiative, cheerfulness, patience, emotional stability and moral character.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Refers to the RN for matters outside the LPN scope of practice.
Student Health
Under the direction of a district Registered Nurse:
Promotes safety and protects the optimal health status of children.
Observes and evaluates student injury/illness concerns and documents such events.
Follows established system for medication administration and documentation. Evaluates response to medication and alerts RN/parents/healthcare provider as appropriate.
Maintains the integrity and security of health information, both manual and electronic.
Consults with registered nurse, physician, parents, and staff to evaluate the effectiveness of care.
Miscellaneous
Provides emergency first aid care to staff
Maintains confidentiality of health information
Practices Universal Precautions at all times
Maintains a professional atmosphere in the health office, classroom and on field trips
Employment:
Per-diem substitute as needed for regular health office staff absences, including LPNs and Health Office Aides. Salary as per current contract. Incentive pay for 1:1 nursing is $10 per hour in addition to the current substitute hourly wage.
