The Challenge

We're looking for a engineering specialist to join our Weaverville Resident Engineering team and serve as our lead project inspector supporting senior engineers administrating large and complex highway construction projects.

In this role, you will:

  • Monitor contractor's daily operations to ensure all work and materials conform to specifications and contract provisions.
  • Supervise and train junior technicians, including NCDOT staff and construction engineering and inspection (CEI) staff
  • Ensure adequate inspection staff are assigned for all phases of work.
  • Perform and review test reports, including work completed by other technicians, to ensure that all material sampling and testing and documentation is correctly conducted.
  • Resolve daily constructability issues and ensure that all traffic control devices installed, and phasing utilized is in accordance to plans and standard drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with the NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act and that all work performed in permitted areas is done in accordance with the permits.
  • Oversee utility relocations by contract or by others to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitor contractor's operations to ensure compliance with approved subcontracts and contract Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) requirements.
  • Communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners.
  • Apply a wide range of decision-making and the use of good judgment.
  • Work on projects lasting from 1-2 months to 3-4 years in the Asheville Resident Engineer's Office, and sometimes at any location in NCDOT Division 13.
  • Supervise many different employees in many situations.

What You Bring

Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

Customer service experience solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.

Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems, analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans, and working in a team environment to complete assignments.

Phased construction inspection experience involving heavy traffic volumes and complex environmental permitting.

Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction.

Ability to read, interpret, and explain construction plans, contract provisions, construction staking, specifications, inspection procedures, environmental permits, and drawings.

Good verbal and written communications skills to effectively communicate, establish, and maintain working relationships with team members, contractors, NCDOT staff, other government agencies, and the public.

Ability to work near high traffic volumes and around heavy construction equipment.
