The anticipated season for this position begins April 1st and ends August 30th. Hours and days of work vary and include evenings and weekends.

This position exists to assist with the operation and maintenance at the Waterville State Fish Hatchery (WSFH) including fish propagation assignments and stocking within the nine county Waterville Fish Management Area, oftentimes working independently. Specifically, this position exists to assist with the seasonal northern pike, walleye, and muskellunge hatchery operations at the Waterville State Fish Hatchery. Because of the unpredictable nature of wild fish, scheduled hours will be based on staffing needs and may include day, evening, or night shifts

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including digging, lifting, planting, shoveling, hauling, carrying, bending, pushing, climbing and walking on uneven terrain for extended periods of time in tight workspaces, extreme weather and/or environmental conditions.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work independently.

Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather and environmental conditions.

Experience performing routine maintenance and repair of small and large equipment, and other equipment and tools.

Ability to operate small and heavy equipment and various hand and power tools.

Ability to read temperature and weight measurements on thermometers and weighing scales.

Ability to measure, record and accurately enter data onto paper and computer programs (water temperature, fish length, and weight measurements, fish counts, time sheet data, etc.) and demonstrate attention to detail.

Basic knowledge of fish management and common species identification.

Ability to follow safety protocols and safely work with others.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in fish culture, fish hatchery operations, monitoring and maintaining water flows, water temperatures and fish eggs.

Work experience in Natural Resource Management.

Familiarity and experience in the use of fish sampling equipment.

Experience effectively working independently.

Ability to identify and respond to emergency hatchery situations and demonstrated communication skills sufficient to work with lead worker and/or supervisors to problem solve.

Basic plumbing skills and experience performing routine maintenance to pumps, water filters, water heaters/chillers, and water delivery systems.

Record-keeping skills.

Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate, oversee, and direct movements and actions of the general public while visiting the hatchery.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
