Through the design and implementation of various types of research studies and the strategic interpretation of data, the mission of Humana Healthcare Research (HHR) is to produce high-quality, actionable evidence and rigorous, peer-reviewed research to improve health outcomes, guide Humana’s strategy, and advance the body of knowledge for the scientific community and society at large. HHR maintains external partnerships with healthcare industry, government, academia and others to produce research important to internal and external stakeholders.

The Health Services Research Team in HHR is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join a team of multi-disciplinary research professionals passionate about combining and analyzing diverse types of primary and secondary data to extract new, actionable discoveries about our members and their health-related behaviors. Our team’s areas of focus include—but are not limited to—Medicare policy and payment; care delivery and quality; access to healthcare, and health equity. We’re looking for driven, innovative people who are interested in using their study design and analytical skills to help our members achieve lifelong well-being and help Humana make lasting, positive changes in the healthcare industry. A successful candidate will be familiar with healthcare policy, have experience conducting observational studies using administrative claims data, and have the interest and ability to contribute to all phases of research studies from conceptualization to dissemination

Responsibilities:

Humana is seeking a Senior Research Scientist. As part of the HHR team, you will work collaboratively to design and conduct health services and outcomes research studies:

  • Understand policy, business and clinical issues and map them into quantitative questions at the appropriate level of inquiry.

  • Identify scientifically valid study designs based on research questions and available data sources.

  • Contribute to study conceptualization, literature reviews and study protocol development.

  • Explore internal and external data sources to understand what metrics can be produced.

  • Work with complex healthcare databases to complete descriptive and inferential analyses, produce statistical output and interpret results.

  • Prepare and deliver presentations, abstracts, white papers and manuscripts to communicate study findings to a broad range of audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with quantitative research focus in health services research, health economics, quantitative social science or related field.

  • Familiarity with SAS.

  • Proficiency in at least one statistical coding language.

  • Experience conducting protocol based, collaborative research.

  • Experience working with large and dynamic real-world data sources, such as administrative claims databases or electronic health records, for observational studies.

  • Knowledge of various methodologies used in health services research such as multivariate regression, propensity score analysis, inverse probability treatment weighting, difference in difference, interrupted time series analysis, regression discontinuity designs, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to manage multiple competing projects and initiatives.

  • Ability to create and document a research/analytical plan, complete in depth analysis, and interpret results.

  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to present analytical data and insights to a wide variety of audiences. ​

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or PhD with quantitative research focus in health services research, health economics, quantitative social science or related field.

  • Advanced knowledge of SAS.

  • Understanding of healthcare policy and managed care.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

$93,000 - $128,000 per year

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
