Requirements

The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner within the Environmental Health and Safety Department promotes a safe work environment for all by focusing on promotion of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from occupational hazards. The incumbent provides an integrated approach to delivery of quality occupational health medical surveillance and clinical services, such as health hazard assessment, injury/illness investigation, vaccines and bloodwork, and assuring compliance with legal, regulatory and ethical standards. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide nursing care in an occupational health setting, including first aid, emergency response, assessing and monitoring environmental hazards for special classes of employees, promoting optimal employee wellness, and risk-based prevention programs.

  • Ensure employees are identified under the proper Occupational Risk Exposure Category to determine appropriate screening for vaccination status and relevant vaccine-preventable diseases and tuberculosis.

  • Conduct and/or ensure that OSHA required medical surveillance activities such as medical clearances for respiratory protection, working with animals, audiometric examinations, vaccinations, and routine fit-for-duty examinations are completed.

  • Responsible for diagnosing patients, developing treatment plans, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests.

  • Stay informed on new or emerging Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Health and Human Services (HHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) policies and guidelines for healthcare workers, or regulatory changes and makes recommendations for revisions to the program.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Emergency Preparedness to support emergency preparedness, response, recovery projects, initiatives, and activities as directed.

  • Respond to public health emergencies as directed and effectively carry out emergency duties as assigned.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Executive Director, Environmental Health and Safety and will have 1 direct report, the Occupational Health Coordinator. This position will work closely with EH&S Managers to develop medical surveillance programs and ensure proper care based on hazard analysis. This position will also collaborate with other groups on campus such as Public Health, Emergency Management, Risk and Planning and Facilities Management.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Masters of Science MSN

  • APRN License from the District of Columbia

  • Three (3) years of experience in occupational health, emergency room nursing, or equivalent

  • Working knowledge of occupational health nursing principles, methods, ethics, and techniques

  • Must be able to perform a blood draw and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections

  • Must have a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with employees and colleagues

  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, high attention to detail, and strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population

  • Works well independently and on interdisciplinary teams

  • Experience providing teaching and training to medical and non-medical personnel

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-year supervisor/management experience preferred

  • Prior work experience in an Occupational Health setting

  • Knowledge and understanding of public health emergency preparedness. Knowledge of the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS), the Incident Command System (ICS), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Public Health Preparedness Capabilities, and other recognized standards and best practices in public health emergency preparedness and emergency management

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$80,429.00 - $157,238.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
