Summary The Locksmith works under the direction of the Senior Locksmith and/or Supervisory Senior Locksmith and is responsible for installing, repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, and servicing all types of mechanical locking devises. Responsible for making keys, re-pinning cylinders or pin tumbler locks, and opening locks with or without keys including built-in and padlock combination locks. Assists Senior Locksmith with lock and key control matters. Responsibilities Installs locks on all types of doors. Installs panic bars on fire doors and other places where such panic bars are required by regulations. Repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots all types of door and combination locks. Performs the full installation and repair cycle on commercially manufactured locking devices. Assists in reworking locks to improve or provide new structural or functional capabilities. Reworks and finishes substitute parts and fabricates parts as needed. Assembles locking devices and tests and evaluates completed projects. Make all types of keys. Opens locks on all doors and whenever necessary opens locks with or without the key i.e. by impressioning, drilling or picking. Changes the combination on security vault doors in conjunction with the custodian of the vault. Upon receipt of a service request, coordinates with the requestor to ensure the appropriate locking devices and hardware are being used to provide adequate security. Re-pins pin tumblers on cylinder locks, which use both master and change keys by taking locks apart and fitting the tumblers to the keys. Performs locking device and hardware maintenance such as cleaning, oiling and servicing of vault doors and escape hatches necessary to ensure proper operation. Maintains stock replacement locks and locking devices and hardware for all locking mechanisms and maintains accountability and control of such stock. Assists the Senior Locksmith in maintaining and updating records of safe and cipher lock combinations, keys and cylinder numbers. The Locksmith is responsible for planning and maintaining master key systems and assuring that no interchanges occur. The Locksmith will periodically be required to attend training to enhance and maintain skills to keep abreast of industrial trends and technological developments as they relate to physical security and locksmithing. Qualifications Position Requirements Requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalent experience and at least three years' experience as a locksmith of familiarity with locksmith techniques. Some knowledge of hardware specifications, electro-mechanical hardware (systems and components) is required. Must be able to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). Requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 15 pounds and up to 50 pounds or heavier weights, with assistance. Workers frequently stand, stoop, bend, kneel and work in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. Work is normally done inside in areas that are well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Occasionally works outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Exposed to possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; preferred experience using Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook, Excel). WE-44 requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalent experience and at least five years' experience as a locksmith. Must be knowledgeable of industrial and governmental security lock and key control programs such as FF-L-2740. Extensive knowledge of hardware specifications, electro-mechanical hardware (systems and components) and system installation and purchasing is required. Ability to decipher commercially manufactured locking devices and understand the working interrelationships with a variety of equipment such as monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms and sensors, which make up security or surveillance systems. Must be able to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). Demonstrated leadership abilities. This position requires a fully onsite presence and to be on call 24/7.
