The Health Education Specialist works for the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) in the Department of Pediatrics at Georgetown University's Medical Center. The position is funded by a cooperative agreement from the Office of Head Start (OHS), Administration for Children and Families (ACF). OHRC serves as oral health lead for the National Center for Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety (NCHBHS) in partnership with the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD). This position is responsible for providing technical assistance to Head Start regional and program staff and health and social service professionals to promote optimal oral health for children and expectant parents enrolled in Head Start programs and their families. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop new and/or adapt existing resources (e.g., Brush Up on Oral Health tip sheets, Healthy Habits for Happy Smiles handouts, Resources to Make You Smile! newsletters), including coordinating external reviews by subject matter experts, incorporating relevant information from reviews into draft resources, and identifying photographs.

  • For new resources, complete the NCHBHS product submission form and submit it to the Education Development Center (EDC) NCHBHS co-lead to submit to OHS for approval.

  • Develop new and/or adapt existing presentations (slides and scripts) for use by NCHBHS staff, including dental hygienist liaisons (DHLs), at conferences and webinars for Head Start regional and program staff and health and social service professionals.

  • Submit presentation slides to EDC to submit to OHS for approval, presenting at national and regional conferences for Head Start regional and program staff and health and social service professionals.

  • Post requests for upcoming DHL presentations to the DHL discussion list, share the list of presentations with EDC staff to create an evaluation QR code, revise the presentation slide with the evaluation QR code, and share the slide with the presenter.

  • Assist in planning oral health session(s) for the NCHBHS-hosted Health and Mental Health Leaders Institute, and present at the institute as requested.

  • Respond to information requests, monitor MyPeers for oral health questions, entering requests and responses into OHRC’s Central Tracking database.

  • Monitor the DHL discussion list, responding to posted questions or comments as needed and posting relevant information and resource descriptions.

  • Serve on NCHBHS ad hoc workgroups, identifying new evidence-based/informed resources that are relevant to Head Start oral health activities.

  • Participate in NCHBHS oral health project weekly staff meetings and bi-monthly huddles, entering brief descriptions of activities and the amount of time spent working on them in the NCHBHS Activity Log each day.

  • Help plan and participate in bi-monthly ASTDD/OHRC management calls, quarterly DHL webinars, and annual regional DHL coordinators meetings, participating in NCHBHS consortium quarterly calls and semi-annual meetings.

  • Help prepare quarterly verbal health progress reports for EDC and semi-annual and annual oral health reports for federal project officers, reviewing draft DHL annual assessments.

Work InteractionsThis position interacts with OHRC staff and contractors, OHS federal project officers, NCHBHS consortium partners, Head Start regional and program staff, health and social service professionals, and the public. The health communication specialist reports to the OHRC director.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree; graduate degree preferred

  • Dental hygienist with 15–20 years of experience in academia, clinical care, health policy, or public health

  • 5–10 years of experience supporting Head Start programs

  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical assistance (e.g., providing presentations, producing publications) to community-based program staff and professionals

  • Strong analytical, communication, and management skills

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
