The Fire Protection Engineer PE will provide fire protection labor support within the NAVFAC Washington area of responsibility performing various tasks/services.

Responsibilities

  • Fire protection engineering design and production support from project inception through

  • Develop and execute projects with both Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build delivery methods.

  • Provide technical leadership/mentorship to junior engineers/designers and review other fire protection engineers’ work for code compliance and constructability.

  • Estimate design efforts.

  • Provide technical expertise in negotiations with architectural engineering firms and general contractors. The contractor does not have the scope of authority to negotiate/bind the government to a contract.

  • Address contractor submittals and requests for information (RFIs).

  • Provide technical leadership/mentorship to junior engineers/designers.

  • Review other fire protection engineers' work for code compliance and constructability.

  • Estimate design effort and assist in negotiations with architectural engineering firms and general contractors.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and PE required

  • 5+ years of experience in the following:

  • Fire protection design and evaluation of new and existing facilities

  • Fire protection engineer facility designer for new and existing buildings

  • Professional registration as a Licensed Fire Protection Engineer in a state or territory within the United States is required

  • Experience with the full gambit of Fire Protection responsibilities, including:

  • Fire alarm and detection

  • Water-based suppression systems

  • Foam systems

  • Clean agent systems

  • Kitchen Protection

  • Special hazard design

  • Final DoD Secret clearance

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of NFPA, ICC, and UFC codes

  • Experience in Construction Management/Scheduling and Cost-estimating

  • Competent to develop complete construction documents, including drawings and specifications, for new and renovation projects

  • Experience with field inspections and review of installed components

  • Ability to use AutoCAD and other design software

  • Ability to prepare and provide high-level briefs to senior leadership

  • Oral and written communication skills must be advanced

  • Able to travel to Patuxent River, MD at least once a week
