The Executive Director of Communications and Marketing plays a leadership role at McCourt, serving as a strategic adviser to the Dean and a steward of the McCourt School’s reputation. S/he regularly collaborates with and integrates the activities of key campus and external partners. The Executive Director of Communications is also the primary communications strategist at the McCourt School, responsible for stakeholder engagement and developing McCourt’s communications strategies in alignment with and support of the strategic goals of the School, and oversees the execution of these goals. S/he collaborates with external partners including funders, think tanks, alumni, peer institutions, and professional associations. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

Strategy and Communications Advisor

  • Advise and support the Dean on McCourt’s strategic goals by helping to conceptualize goals, align goals with our mission, and clarify intentions and expected methods.

  • Provide advice to the Dean, the Chief of Staff, the Director of Development, and other McCourt leaders on communications strategy and messaging, including narrative development, interacting with campus and external partners, crisis communications, and raising our visibility with key stakeholders.

  • Serve as a primary communication contact and a strategic partner to key campus partners and stakeholders including internal McCourt staff, students, faculty and centers, the president’s office, the provost’s office, the office of advancement, and other GU Schools.

  • Serve as a primary contact for key external partners including funders, think tanks, alumni, peer institutions, and professional associations.

Communications Strategy and Implementation

  • Develop a strategic communications plan for the McCourt School that aligns with and supports the overall strategic goals of McCourt.

  • Oversee the team charged with executing the plan, ensuring message discipline, audience identification, diversity of voices, and representation of and interaction with all members of McCourt’s community including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, alumni centers, and campus partners.

  • Measure for success across all aspects of the plan, including media relations and digital engagement.

  • Collaborate on communications strategy for key McCourt School institutes and centers like MDI, GU Politics, TPP, and our research centers.

Branding and Marketing

  • Working with an outside firm, serve as a part of the team charged with redefining and promoting the brand of the McCourt School.

  • Contribute creative energy and writing support to McCourt’s paid marketing strategy including advertising buys and creative as well as swag.

  • Serve as the primary creative director and project manager for all McCourt marketing videos, highlighting our community, programs, and expertise on the web.

  • Maintain all McCourt School faculty presence on the web, including the design, execution and maintenance of all faculty GUFaculty360 pages, enabling our faculty to raise their visibility and support the McCourt School’s narrative.

  • With the Associate Director of Marketing, develop all printed digital and print marketing materials like the McCourt website, brochures, Policy Perspectives, email communications to key audiences like students and prospective students, peer institutions and alumni.

  • With the Associate Director of Marketing, coordinate the School’s presence at higher education and public policy professional organizations like NASPAA, APPAM, and PMRA, including sponsorship, advertising, swag, tabling, and events.

Strategic Events

  • Conceptualize and execute compelling thought leadership events for students and the broader policy community, including the Whittington Lecture.

  • Collaborate with campus and external partners on strategic and opportunistic events of interest to our community.

  • Integrate the events and programs of McCourt institutes, centers, and other campus partners into the student experience and narrative of the McCourt School.

Work Interactions

The Executive Director of Communications reports to and works closely with the Dean of the McCourt School and the Chief of Staff. The Executive Director manages the strategic communications and events team at McCourt, including the Director of Communications, the Digital Media Associate, and the Communications Associate, Sr. Events Manager and Events Coordinator. The Executive Director regularly collaborates with McCourt staff colleagues like the Director of Admissions, the Director of Student Affairs, and the Director of Development. The Executive Director also works closely with and builds relationships with McCourt faculty and researchers, like the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Executive Director works directly with McCourt key institutes and centers like the faculty and staff at the Massive Data Institute, the Institute of Politics and Public Service, Tech and Public Policy and McCourt’s research centers, to align their work with and integrate it into the narrative of McCourt. The Executive Director often collaborates with campus partners like the President’s office, the Provost’s office, the office of Advancement, and other GU schools like the McDonough School of Business School and School of Foreign Service.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience with increasing responsibility in strategic communications

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and a strategic mindset with the ability to contribute to the development, communication and implementation of sustained strategic planning

  • Share a deep commitment to Georgetown’s and McCourt’s values of developing men and women for others, and be committed to McCourt's mission of impact for the common good

  • Must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including prioritizing appropriately and tracking and reporting progress.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to successfully collaborate and integrate the work of multiple internal and external partners.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$103,723.00 - $202,778.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
