Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Executive Director, Internal Accounting & Treasurer to lead and manage the financial operations of our $85M+ Association. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this pivotal role is responsible for setting and overseeing the financial strategies, policies, and practices that ensure the Association's financial health and growth. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of deep financial expertise, strategic vision, and outstanding communication skills, enabling them to effectively engage with senior executives and the Board of Directors on all matters related to financial reporting, stability, liquidity, and development. Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee comprehensive financial operations, encompassing accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management, for 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) entities.

  • Formulate and execute long-term financial strategies in alignment with the Association’s overarching business goals.

  • Determine, manage, and guide the financial planning and development of the Association’s policies, strategies, and practices. Advise the CEO and other Officers on matters related to financial reporting, stability, liquidity, and growth.

  • Develop, direct, and uphold robust accounting principles, practices, and internal control systems, while implementing resource management best practices.

  • Supervise the Internal Accounting Department, including general ledger accounting, receivables, payables, financial reporting, and budgeting.

  • Structure and staff the department to ensure the provision of accurate, meaningful, and timely financial information to the Board, Officers, and CEO.

  • Establish and maintain current policies and practices to ensure an efficient and effective internal control environment, compliant with all external reporting requirements. Monitor and oversee the consistent application of these practices and procedures.

  • Lead the presentation of financial results to the Board, Officers, and CEO, as well as monthly financial forecasts to support the Association’s short- and long-term planning.

  • Manage relationships with external financial institutions and investment advisors, ensuring policies and practices are in place to optimize cash flow, investment performance, and interest earnings on short-term cash.

  • Oversee the Association's relationship with external auditors, including responsibility for the annual audit and any special audits, as well as banking relationships.

  • Set the agenda and prepare materials for quarterly financial review meetings, ensuring accurate documentation of meeting minutes.

  • Serve as Treasurer for the Association.

  • Hold signature authority for the Association’s operating and other checking accounts.

  • Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and filing of the Association’s tax returns and other regulatory reports.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 10+ years in financial and management roles, preferably within a not-for-profit or association context, or in a medium- to large-sized, complex financial services organization. Experience in the Energy Industry is advantageous.

  • Demonstrated financial leadership with strong team building, presentation, and analytical capabilities. Proficient in strategic and operational planning, accounting, and investment management.

  • At least 5 years of experience engaging with a Board of Directors is preferred.

  • Strong technical expertise in all facets of accounting and financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cash management, management reporting, financial analysis, and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex financial data in a clear and concise manner.

  • Proven ability to lead continuous process improvement initiatives, achieving efficiencies while maintaining high-quality service levels.

  • Strong leadership skills with the capability to build and motivate a high-performing internal Accounting team.

  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and diplomacy skills.

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance, with a CPA or MBA.

Compensation

  • The salary range for this position is set at $230,000 - $260,000 annually. Starting annual salary will be determined on individual qualifications. EEI also offers an annual performance incentive which is prorated for mid-year start dates. This incentive is between 5%-10% of annual base salary, based on performance.

Office Protocol

This is a hybrid position which requires the incumbent to reside in the District of Columbia metropolitan area and come into the office a minimum of three days each week with two of the mandatory days being Tuesday and Wednesday.
