The Institute of International Economic Law (IIEL) at Georgetown Law is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization. IIEL is the focal point for the study of international economic law at Georgetown University and the leading center for international economic law and policy in the world. IIEL’s faculty includes scholars and practitioners at the forefront of all areas of international economic law including international trade, investment, tax, finance, economic security, development, fintech and monetary affairs. Engaged with students, legal practitioners, the DC and global policy communities, IIEL administers a robust calendar of executive education and academic programs. The Executive Director is a senior professional responsible for:

  • The Institute’s strategic long term and short-term planning.

  • Structure and develop programming such as IIEL conferences, colloquia and special events, and external relations.

  • Assist in advancement and fundraising efforts, spearheading the Institute’s communications efforts and representing the Institute alongside faculty at high-profile events.

  • Oversee the publication of Institute-generated reports and the IIEL website, managing student-centered fellowship and certificate programs.

  • Oversee budgets for staff salaries, programs, and activities, including grant funding.

  • Support the mission of the Institute by managing and executing large work streams, projects, and events, overseeing the administration and operations of the organization.

  • Represent IIEL at conferences and meetings, assisting in the execution of the IIEL’s colloquium.

  • Coordinate closely with faculty to bring IIEL programs to targeted external audiences and building communities around our areas of focus to move from ideas to implementation.

  • Coordinate with university staff involving Centers & Institutes, global/transnational, and advancement activities to plan, promote, and execute significant and substantive IIEL programs on campus and abroad.

Work Interactions

The Executive Director coordinates closely with faculty to bring IIEL programs to targeted external audiences and build communities around our areas of focus to move from ideas to implementation. The Executive Director also coordinates with university staff including Associate and Assistant Deans of Centers & Institutes, leadership of the Law Center and individual centers and institutes, as well as Law Center staff and leadership in Communications, Development, Financial Affairs, Grant Administration, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, Career Services, and additional offices as needed.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s in a relevant field or JD

  • 8+ years legal work experience with a substantial focus on international law and policy issues

  • Substantial involvement with international economic law in either government, private practice, or a non-profit organization

  • Experience with successfully maintaining substantial fundraising and grant-oversight efforts

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agenda

  • Experience in management, academic administration, fundraising, and grant management

  • Experience with legislative and/or executive branch processes desired

  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong managerial skills, are essential

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$103,723.00 - $202,778.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
