Customs and Border Protection Data Scientist in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Accountability, Management Inspections Division (MID), Planning and Program Analysis, and Evaluations Branch, located in Washington, DC. Responsibilities Joining U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP), Office of Accountability, Management Inspections Division, will allow you to utilize your expertise to provide data analytics expertise about program and offices across CBP and advising CBP leadership and management with objectively based data and information. This position starts at a salary of $139,395.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $181,216.00 (GS-14, Step 10). In this Data Scientist position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals involved in developing, monitoring, and coordinating data analytics projects relating to high visibility, cross-component issues; resolving critical operational, policy, and resourcing issues; and leading the visualization of programmatic data that provides leadership with the information necessary to make data-drive decisions. Typical Work assignments include: Using scientific methodology, processes, algorithms, and systems to collect and extract relevant data, insights, and information through the use of technology, dashboards, statistical software, and reporting systems. Applying data management and analysis techniques to study, gather, interpret, develop, and report on U.S. Customs and Border Protection operational, policy, and resource data. Providing technical advice to MID, Office of Accountability, and management officials on developing plans and data driven decision-making for programs, operations, objectives, policies, and procedures. Evaluating and monitoring execution of analytics projects to ensure that the implementation of the capability will yield relevant and accurate results. Supporting integration of data, methods, tools, and analytics projects aligned with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Enterprise Analytics Priorities, with responsibility for consulting on multiple analytics, simulation, and data driven projects; including collaborating with related program offices within Customs and Border Protection organizational elements. Qualifications Basic Requirement: You must provide supporting documentation in your application to show you meet the basic requirement below. A. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. You qualify for this position if you meet the basic requirement listed above and possess one year of specialized experience, as described below. Specialized Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Utilizing data visualization software, techniques, and tools (e.g., Google Charts, SAS Viya, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Python, SQL, R, or related applications) and applying algorithms and predictive models for extrapolating data. Utilizing statistical and data analysis methods for projects of a broad and comprehensive nature, for use in analyzing and evaluating large amounts of automated and manual data, to understand significance of analyses' results. Preparing comprehensive technical reports and briefs for use by those who possess various levels of scientific and statistical comprehension and, the ability to expertly explain information and principles (to statisticians, data science professionals, and laypersons) in a manner that is easily understood and fit for decision-making.
