Business Manager - Division of Comparative Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Georgetown University Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) (https://sites.google.com/a/georgetown.edu/dcm/) oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus. Job Overview

The Business Manager for the DCM assists the Division Director in managing the financial, human resource and office management processes to achieve departmental and University goals and objectives.

They maintain the internal departmental accounting and chargeback system, which serves as a shared resource for all of Georgetown University biomedical research; and ensure adherence to University policies and procedures as well as federal compliance with NIH “Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual” for Animal Resource Facilities.

The Business Manager for all accounts payable and receivable, working and negotiating with external vendors as well as processing revenue generating and service contracts. Furthermore, they serve as the department’s Human Resource Contact to provide information and guidance to the Director and departmental employees regarding employee related matters as well as the preparation and processing of hiring forms and administration for recruitment, employment, waivers and terminations.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain departmental cost accounting system

  • Perform Cost Analysis and financial reporting on a quarterly basis

  • Monitor and process all contract purchases and services provided on service contracts to assure that charges reconcile with services provided

  • Analyze annual departmental expenditure, income and salary data and animal populations

  • Supervise and mentor office personnel including performance evaluations, merit increases, and disciplinary actions

  • Customize and maintain the software system by working directly with the company, DCM office staff and IACUC Office

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Division Director, the Business Manager performs a critical function within the Division of Comparative Medicine that works with the Veterinarian and Husbandry teams in meeting the animal research needs of the University

In supporting Georgetown University Medical Center and the Main Campus focuses on research and discovery, the Business Manager collaborates with the Finance and Human Resources offices to ensure fiscal prudence and compliant operations, and directly communicates with Principal Investigators and research lab personnel.

As well, they interact directly with external staff members and interdepartmental staff members - such as EH&S, Facilities, UIS, vendors, AAALAC, NCAB, USDA and IACUC site visitors/inspectors; and provides direct supervision for an Administrative Specialist and an Accountant.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting or a related field

  • At least 5 years if related experience is required [note: consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and work experience]

  • Supervisory experience

  • Superb organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team-oriented approach

  • Demonstrated computer and database management skills, particularly Excel spreadsheets

  • Ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a laboratory animal facility or academic research-oriented department

  • Certified Manager - Animal Resources (CMAR) through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, MBA, or another post-baccalaureate financial training/certification

    Pay Range:

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
