Animal Care Technician - Division of Comparative Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center

The mission of our Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) (https://dcm.georgetown.edu/) - within Georgetown University Medical Center is to provide exceptional animal care with exemplary customer service that supports the biomedical research and teaching missions of the University; while promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that fosters a culture of care for animals, DCM staff, and the research community.

Job Overview

The Animal Care Technician supports Georgetown University’s research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research in support of animal research initiatives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform daily husbandry for laboratory animals, including handling, feeding, watering, changing cages and monitoring heath of laboratory animals

  • Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Assist with cage wash and autoclave operation and sanitizes areas and/or equipment

    Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, the Facility Manager, and Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Animal Care Technician interacts with other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff.

This position has been designated as On-Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Physical Environment The Animal Care Technician works in a designated work area, but also spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they may be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals.

They perform work with animals/animal odors - in hot and/or steamy environments - at times involving repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions and/or lifting up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency

  • Verbal and written communication skills for reading and following instructions

    Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working with animals

  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AAALAS) certification
