PTC Therapeutics Vice President, Global Head of Intellectual Property in Warren, New Jersey

Job Description Summary:

We are seeking a Global Head of Intellectual Property who is pro-active, innovative and has strong communication and organizational skills to join us in our Legal Team, based in our headquarters office in Warren, New Jersey.
Reporting to the Global General Counsel, the Global Head of Intellectual Property (HIP) will provide strategic vision addressing PTC's current and future intellectual property portfolio. The HIP will work in partnership with other senior leaders to drive IP strategy aligned with PTC's overall strategic directives. This is a senior level role with CEO visibility. The HIP will clearly articulate PTC's IP strategy with responsibility for the Company's IP including counseling stakeholders, managing patent drafting, prosecution and enforcement, litigation, licensing and other complex business transactions, publication review, due diligence, trademark matters, and opinion work.
The HIP oversees the global IP strategy as well as management of the IP team and operations. They oversee and prioritize projects aimed at protecting PTC's IP and improving the operational efficiency of the IP department internally and with key PTC stakeholders. In addition, the HIP oversees IP counsel for assigned projects across R&D and commercial activities, including all aspects of patent drafting, prosecution, opposition work, licensing, trademarks, etc.
The HIP will foster collaboration across the IP Team and key stakeholders, spearheading digital transformation initiatives and optimizing communication channels. Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic guidance and counsel to senior management and executive leadership on IP-related matters, including risk assessment, competitive analysis, and portfolio valuation.
  • Manage and enhance the company's current IP strategy.
  • Manage the IP team, including strategy, decisions, workflow, and the growth and development of team members.
  • Oversee and prioritize (in partnership with the LLT), the development of tools, guidelines and
  • processes aimed at facilitating the overall performance and governance of the IP department.
  • Lead the assessment and implementation of digital solutions across the IP department.
  • Design and lead the implementation of various IP Operations/portfolio management projects aimed at improving internal ways of working and interface with PTC stakeholders.
  • Manage IP budgets and e-billing.
  • Collaborate with Global General Counsel and Head of Legal Operations on key transversal operations projects.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive intelligence to identify opportunities and risks related to intellectual property and recommend proactive measures to protect our interests.
  • Stay abreast of changes in intellectual property laws and regulations globally and ensure that the company's IP strategy remains compliant and adaptive to evolving legal and market landscapes.
  • Accountable for collaboration with cross-functional teams, including research and development, legal, regulatory affairs, and business development, to ensure IP considerations are integrated into product development and commercialization strategies. Undertake all aspects of IP work needed to support allocated PTC projects and possibly platforms (drafting, prosecution, contentious matters, contractual work).
  • Foster a culture of innovation and IP awareness across the organization, providing education and training to IP Team and PTC employees on IP best practices and policies.

Qualifications:

This position requires a patent attorney with a demonstrated ability to manage a team. In addition to possessing the requisite legal and technical skills, the successful candidate must approach this role from an experienced business perspective and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, ethics and integrity, communication, as well as strategic/conceptual thinking capabilities and a problem-solving orientation.

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from a nationally recognized law school.
  • 10 years of relevant experience and demonstrated success managing patents and trademarks for a publicly traded life sciences company with development-stage and marketed products in the U.S., as well as outside the U.S., particularly in Europe, Latin America and Asia/Pacific.
  • Admitted to the Bar of at least one U.S. state and eligible for a NJ limited in-house license.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline and United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) Registration as a Patent Attorney.
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate and respond to changes in the competitive landscape and regulatory environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, business judgment and superior work ethic.
  • Well organized, highly team-oriented, and able to work with cross-functional teams and manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure.
  • Superior verbal and written communication and analytical skills, coupled with the ability to calmly resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Ability to use IP skills and judgment to advance corporate objectives.

Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.

  • Knowledge of US and ex-US patent law and procedural matters, ideally with experience of managing patent administration activities.
  • Experience with M&A and other strategic transactions.
  • Experience managing other attorneys and supervising support staff in a corporation, as well as experience with cost effective management of outside legal resources and providing business focused IP advice.
  • Education or experience in the sciences (chemistry or biology) or other relevant educational specialization (for example, public health).
  • Experience in development and management of international corporate structures.
  • Travel requirements: Approximately 10% travel per year
