Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston Clinical Supervisor in Waltham, Massachusetts

Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (OCB) is currently seeking a Clinical Supervisor for our Waltham location.

The Clinical Supervisor role is responsible for oversight of the efficient flow of patients within the Clinical Supervisor assigned location(s).  This includes ensuring all patients are seen in a timely manner, all MD schedules are running on time, and assisting with patient care as necessary.  Acting as a mentor and leader for all clinical technicians who are working in their location.

The Clinical Supervisor will be responsible for upholding OCB values of outstanding patient care, Unity, Ethics & Integrity, Fairness, Operational Excellence, and Fiscal Responsibility.

Personnel Management:

  • Assist Regional Clinical Manager in training and mentoring of assigned technical personnel.

  • Provides input on employee training needs, annual skill evaluations, annual performance reviews.

  • Organizes and conducts regular huddle meetings of clinical staff to develop a game plan at the start of each clinic.  

  • Consults with Regional Clinical Manager on problems and interpretation of policies to ensure patient and practice needs are met.

  • Positive and professional attitude while in clinic to keep a “Can Do” attitude and staff engaged.

    Clinic Responsibilities:

  • Ability to perform patient workups and diagnostic testing as necessary by most senior level clinical staff on an as needed basis to maintain an efficient running clinic.

  • Addresses patient complaints on site and communicates delays/issues with patients regularly.

  • Maintain accuracy and quality of crash cart and drug logs.

  • Responsible for managing quality control including but not limited to medical waste management, assures all equipment testing calibration is carried out as required per policy, maintains proper oversight of injectable inventory.

  • Ordering all clinical supplies and managing inventory of drugs, equipment, and supplies in assigned offices.

  • Always ensures efficient patient flow – identifies bottlenecks and resolves issues.

  • Working in conjunction with the Front Office on timely communication of delays, cancellations, availability.

  • Functions in a service role for the clinical team by supporting the ophthalmologists and optometrists to meet their clinical needs in a positive and timely manner.

  • Using discretion and working independently.

  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient health information, organizational metrics, and staff related data.

    Essential skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication.

  • Efficient organizational skills which require heightened multitasking capabilities. 

  • Knowledge about operational issues, goals and how to improve patient flow.

  • Ability to conduct full ophthalmic workups including diagnostic testing as necessary.

  • Proven ability to work well in a leadership capacity.

  • Empathetic personality with concern for patients’ needs.

  • Maintains a positive professional demeanor.

  • Demonstrated computer literacy.

    Education and Experience:

  • Certified as Ophthalmic Assistant COA, technician COT, or medical technologist COMT.

  • Three years’ experience in supervision or clinical lead of practice operations.

  • Working and practical knowledge of all aspects regarding ophthalmic patient care.

  • Demonstrated skills in motivating clinical staff.

  • Lean Six Sigma experience a plus.

  • Knowledge of Epic preferred.

  • College degree preferred.

    Reports to: Regional Clinical Manager

Supervision Exercised: Clinical Technicians, Ophthalmic Scribes, Diagnostic Technicians          

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires prolonged sitting, frequent standing, ability to traverse office, some bending, stooping and stretching.  Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.  Requires manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment and maneuver a patient if in a wheelchair, must be able to accurately type information into EMR system. Requires ability to communicate verbally, and a normal range of hearing and eyesight to report, prepare and communicate appropriate reports.  Requires ability to work under stressful conditions and work occasional irregular hours.
