Description of Work
This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). The Municipal and School Transportation Assistance (MTSA) office seeks to provide our fellow with the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the DOT. Provide support to enhance the Municipal & School Transportation Assistance product that is utilized statewide.
Support MSTA by observing school traffic, work with traffic modeling software, and attend project meetings. Tasks could include the creation of training materials and preparation of presentation materials, and execution of communications plans.
Coordinate with and conduct outreach to NCDOT staff in other units to gather technical expertise needed to support the department’s.
Support data management for various MSTA programs. Tasks could include maintaining program data in Microsoft Access and excel.
Participate in department activities across the department’s project delivery lifecycle. Some activities may include occasional field visits.
Conduct research on transportation industry trends and other assigned topics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Strong computer skills.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Familiarity with engineering, environmental, or transportation industry.
Comfortable with research and learning new concepts.
Comfortable working within deadlines
Interest in public administration and program development.
Majors to consider are Math, Business, Technology, Science, or other related STEM fields that are not engineering.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Must be a currently enrolled student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI)
