Transportation Engineer Tech I, II and III: Performs basic drafting, calculations, and field work; learns basic design procedures and techniques. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer Tech II and III additional duties: Performs intermediate drafting and calculations and basic design work; performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Engineer Tech III additional duties: Performs advanced drafting and calculations and intermediate design work; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer Tech I: Assists in preparation of roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, equipment and building plans.Learns to use automated roadway programs, hydraulic design programs and/or interactive graphics.Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities; copies detailed plans and drawings. Files and makes copies. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer Tech II: in addition to the above Learns to write general notes and special provisions on specifications. Performs basic design work. Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans. Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System. Transportation Engineer Tech III: in addition to the above Learns additional automated design methods or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal/lighting design, retaining walls and building design. Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features. Performs intermediate design work. Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System. Writes general notes, specifications, and provisions.Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
