What You Need to Know

Salary Range: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire's experience.

Work Schedule: Ability to work non-standard hours.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three years of related experience in laboratory operations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computers and cloud computing environments

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships

  • Ability to bend and/or stoop for long periods

  • Ability to lift and/or move moderate to heavy weight objects

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or Doctorate Degree in chemistry

  • Five years of related experience in laboratory operations

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Knowledge and ability to handle chemicals in a safe manner

  • Experience developing safety management plan

  • Ability to obtain a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license within 30 days of employment

Essential Duties/Tasks

  • Laboratory Logistics and Operations: Works with program staff to maintain inventory records and prepare the annual order for all expendables for organic chemistry laboratories. Schedules and manages laboratory assistants in handling and preparation of chemicals, solvents, and unknowns for lab experiments, collection, processing, and proper disposal of chemical waste. Supervises set-up of laboratory equipment for appropriate experiments. Directs and supervises operations involving all aspects of chemical storage, safety labeling, and inventory control. Develops and maintains standard operating procedures. Conducts process evaluations and implements improvements to minimize costs and promotes efficient use of time. Monitors need for maintenance of laboratory facilities and requests appropriate handling of needs.

  • Supervision and Training: Interviews, hires, trains student workers each semester. Trains student workers and teaching assistants in proper laboratory safety, all laboratory operations, and enforces safe working procedures. Assists with the administration of laboratories with TA training and coordination. Assists in the development and update of instructional materials for teaching laboratories.

  • Laboratory Instrumentation and Equipment: Recommends new and replacement instrumentation. Evaluates merits of various instruments, issues orders for the instrument, and oversees acquisition and installation of the equipment. Develops procedures for student use of all instrumentation. Oversees checks of correct functioning of all equipment scheduled for use. Troubleshoots malfunctions and schedules repair by others.

  • Laboratory Administration: Participates in laboratory supervision duties for each large laboratory course. Assists in the preparation of teaching materials and pre-laboratory presentations. Coordinates and oversees the day-to-day operations both in the physical laboratory/stockroom spaces and in the digital/online spaces. Manages instrumentation used in instructional laboratories Prepares regular performance evaluations for teaching assistants. Recommends pay raises and/or performance awards.

  • Department Outreach: Assists with outreach programs that are held in the laboratory classrooms including the department Open House and summer programs and workshops. Prepares lab rooms and assists with set-up for use of these rooms for department outreach.

  • Special Instructional Projects: Assists in the development and testing of new experiments and curricula. Purchases new chemicals, apparatus, and supplies. Evaluates and recommends experimental modifications for hazardous waste minimization. Assists in the development/updating of instructional materials. Transports placarded hazardous materials and p erforms other duties as assigned.
