Who We Are

The Department of Population Medicine in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute is a research and teaching collaboration between Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (a Point32Health company) and Harvard Medical School. As the nation's first medical school appointing department based in a health plan, we are strategically positioned to improve population health and healthcare delivery locally, nationally, and internationally. The Department is housed in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, which is one of fifteen Harvard Medical School affiliates. Job Summary

The newly founded LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence seeks a highly motivated individual to join the organization in the Senior Program Manager role to serve as the Executive Director. This Center is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The Center’s mission is to advance LGBTQ health equity. Working with partners across Harvard and around the world, the Center focuses on three areas: (1) training the next generation of LGBTQ health leaders; (2) research to build the evidence base on LGBTQ health—including in topics areas like mental health, reproductive health, and chronic disease (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular disease); and (3) dissemination to inform policymakers, healthcare providers, and the public about how to improve LGBTQ health most effectively.

This role will be responsible for the Center’s overall management, strategy, and growth. Responsibilities will include overseeing: day-to-day operations, strategic planning, supervision and mentorship of people, funding streams, grant proposals, and philanthropic funding. This role will oversee all Center work to ensure that the mission and objectives are accomplished within the constraints of multiple budgets, schedules, and expectations.

This role directly reports to Dr. Brittany Charlton, the Founding Director of the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence.

Key Responsibilities/Duties – what you will be doing

  • Direct all daily operations of the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence; manage the Center’s scope, finances, and strategy, thereby creating structure and policies to maximize efficiency, productivity, and success.

  • Serve as the primary thought partner to the Founding Director and drive the Center’s strategic planning and growth.

  • Lead and manage the Center’s teaching, research, and dissemination agenda.

  • Hire, train, and develop staff to support the Center’s mission and provide strategic thought and leadership; manage and mentor Center-affiliated students, postdocs, and early-career faculty.

  • Help to secure funding (e.g., extramural grants); manage finances and projects, including pre- and post-award activities (e.g., Institutional Review Board materials).

  • Lead development, including through long-term relationships with partners within and outside of the Center’s parent organizations.

  • Serve as the Center’s outward-facing representative, liaising with partners, advisors, community members, healthcare providers, policymakers, journalists, etc; broaden the Center’s visibility and reach locally and globally; author publications and reports.

  • Oversee Center communications and event planning; manage all associated public relations, including social media.

  • Increase access to and participation of underrepresented groups in LGBTQ health work.

  • Demonstrate creativity and commitment in advancing the Center’s mission.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications – what you need to perform the job

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, public health, public policy, demography, psychology, sociology, health economics, social work, nursing, law, medicine, or similar field.

  • Must have 15+ years of relevant experience, including 8+ years in supervision and 4+ years in managing programs.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and extensive management and supervisory experience are required.

  • Must be able to lead and motivate teams effectively and through influence; superior problem-solving and change management skills are necessary as is extensive experience fostering an environment conducive to growth.

  • Need to have a history of collaborating effectively with internal and external colleagues.

  • Must be motivated and flexible and be able to work independently, prioritize work, and operate under tight deadlines with limited supervision.

  • Must be able to represent project teams externally.

  • Experience communicating research to policymakers and the public is strongly encouraged.

  • Demonstrated success in development and managing relationships with philanthropic funding is required.

  • Must be resilient, collaborative, flexible, innovative, and committed to LGBTQ health equity.
