Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation of a commercial refuse and/or recycling collection vehicle on assigned routes. Transports collected garbage, recyclables, brush and other materials to appropriate City disposal sites. May exercise functional supervision over assigned crew.

6:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensures that collection workers have all necessary work equipment.

  • Inspects collection vehicle for proper mechanical functioning.

  • Collects garbage, recyclables, brush and other materials on assigned routes

  • Operates a large commercial vehicle to transport materials to appropriate disposal site.

  • Complies with local rules and regulations.

  • Operates mechanism for unloading truck.

  • Operates a packer type collection vehicle.

  • Operates all equipment attached to trucks such as compactor, drums and hopper.

  • Completes a daily activity report.

  • Cleans truck at the end of each work day.

  • Consults with supervisor on any route changes or hazardous driving conditions.

  • May pick up, carry and empty refuse into appropriate vehicle, which includes lifting and carrying bins and materials weighing 40 pounds.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • Six (6) months of truck driving experience, or completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program, or completion of the Solid Waste Management Department's Apprentice I Program

  • Valid Texas Commercial Class 'B' Driver's License.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures and practices.

  • Knowledge of commercial vehicle operating procedures.

  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

  • Ability to learn City streets.

  • Ability to safely operate a large commercial vehicle in heavy traffic and in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.

  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.

  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust; damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.
