Description

Are you passionate about programs that allow K-12 students to safely walk and/or bike to/from school? If so, the City of Harrisonburg's Public Works Department has an exciting new opportunity that may interest you! The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coordinator position allows you to coordinate, encourage, and enable active transportation by students within the Harrisonburg City Public Schools! You're the ideal candidate for this position if you have an enthusiasm for walking, biking, and/or multimodal transportation and have the ability to build and maintain relationships.

The SRTS Coordinator is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $21.69 - $23.86 per hour (equivalent to $45,115 - $49,628 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. This position is a grant-funded role that is currently available through August 31, 2026 (pending re-establishment of funding thereafter).

As the SRTS Coordinator, you'll:

  • Work with parents and guardians of school-aged students (K-12), in addition to a variety of City Departments, school administration, and other stakeholders, to ensure safety for students walking or bicycling to school;

  • Work with a variety of stakeholders to expand or create programs, such as “walking school buses,” to identify locations that crossing guards are needed, and volunteer coordination;

  • Plan and conduct activities that encourage increased numbers of students walking and bicycling to schools, including but not limited to “Walk to School Day” and “Bike to School Day;”

  • Collect and analyze data pertaining to the volume and frequency of students walking and bicycling to school;

  • Provide data and other necessary reports to VDOT, in addition to assisting with grant funding efforts supporting safe routes to school programming and staffing;

  • Coordinate regularly with physical education teachers regarding in-class bicycle education, safety, and maintenance and provide support for those programs when necessary;

  • Coordinate with school representatives to identify policies, programs, infrastructure modifications, and strategies that encourage walking and bicycling to school;

  • Coordinate with school representatives to ensure that necessary infrastructure and facilities are in place on school properties to accommodate walking and bicycling to school;

  • Coordinate with Public Works staff to identify and recommend funding improvements to infrastructure connecting schools and neighborhoods, improving safety for students walking or bicycling;

  • Operate a City vehicle in the performance of duties;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in education, urban planning, community outreach, community health, or policy analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required for Consideration):

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Prior experience working with children and/or adolescents and/or in a school setting.

  • Bilingual abilities.

    The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test, as required by Harrisonburg City Public Schools;

  • DMV record review; and

  • Criminal background check.
