Job Description

The Research Specialist I is a full-time position to support the sweet potato breeding program and NIFA-funded sweet potato genomics research project and to manage the genomics lab for effective research operations.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform plant tissue culture, genomic DNA extraction, standard PCR and dqPCR genotyping, and Next-Generation Sequencing.

  • Maintain sweet potato stock plants, manage field plots, and conduct mechanical and/or manual harvest for phenotyping purposes.

  • Oversee daily operations and maintenance of the Plant Genomics Lab, supervise students, and handle requisition of lab supplies as needed.

  • Work occasional flexible schedules, including weekends during peak periods of field research.

  • Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Four years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.

  • Ability to exert heavy force.

  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
