Who We Are

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University researches the physical processes that influence and determine our climate as well as providing insight into how and why the climate changes. This is an enormous topic and covers spatial scales from atmospheric chemistry, aerosol particles, air pollution, cloud particles, with radii of microns, to large-scale atmospheric waves, with length scales of thousands of kilo met e rs. Topics studied in the department include the physics of convection, climate variability, feedback physics, climate sensitivity, climate extremes, and regional modeling . Variability and predictability of climate on seasonal to millennial timescales, coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction, large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans.

What We Want

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be responsible for conducting designated research projects, writing manuscripts, developing research proposals, and helping with graduate student mentoring and group organization. The position will be working in the labs of Dr. Yue Zhang (primary) and other collaborators from Texas A&M Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, in the areas of atmospheric chemistry.

What You Need to Know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Travel: This position has the potential to travel domestically for 1-3 weeks each year.

Special Note: Due to this position’s salary having all or a portion of it being funded by grants or contracts, the continuing salary and overall employment is contingent upon availability of these funds in the future.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD in environmental sciences and engineering, environmental chemistry, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, or related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to lift/move moderately heavy equipment

  • Ability to stand up continuously for 1-3 hours during experiments

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience in aerosol-cloud interactions, aerosol chemistry, aerosol phase state, mass spectrometry, and field/laboratory sampling

  • Experience with advanced data analysis tools using statistical methods

  • Prior experience in lab settings conducting experiments and field measurements

  • Previous publications in top tier academic chemistry journals

  • Previous experience working with doctoral and undergraduate students

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting Data Analysis: Keeps accurate records of experiments and results. Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to conduct data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results.

  • Conducting Research Projects: Designs, plan, and coordinate designated research projects through experimental techniques.

  • Research Writing: Prepares figures and writes manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. Develops research proposals.

  • Training and Mentoring: Mentors graduate students. May supervise undergraduate and/graduate students and other laboratory, technical, or field staff involved in research.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
