Job Summary

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will conduct research on covalent functionalization of Mxenes, develop training materials/courses, and teach courses for the program). This is an AFOSR Project funded through the (Clarkson Aerospace Corporation) at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Duties include conducting research on (grant subject matter) providing training, and teaching undergraduate or graduate courses at TAMIU.

  • Conduct research on Mxenes.

  • Provide training on synthesis and characterization of products.

  • Teach courses on material science or related classes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Design and develop nanomaterials to address biomedical and environmental challenges.

  • Covalently functionalize MXene including the preparation of various functionalized polymers and block-copolymers, polymer characterization, and spectroscopic studies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Doctorate degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science or related field.

  • Experience – Knowledge of nanomaterials, MXenes and other emerging 2D materials, and other related areas.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • To conduct wet lab experiments, including setting up solid phase organic synthesis. Characterize organo-peptides using HPLC, LCMS, NMR.

  • Covalent functionalization of nanomaterials using amide chemistry.

  • Nanocomposite formulation- thermo-mechanical characteristic tests and applications.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Prior experience in polymer synthesis and characterization.

  • Prior experience with drug delivery systems or stimuli-responsive polymers is preferred but not required.

  • Prior experience conducting research on solid phase synthesis.

  • Characterization using instruments such as FTIR, Raman, SEM

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

Ability to:

  • Conduct research on nanomaterials

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.

  • Provide training.

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing

  • Interact professionally with University personnel, the general public, and students.

  • Demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills.

  • Multitask, prioritize, and work with deadlines.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Knowledge and Abilities

  • Independently carrying out applications of synthesized nanomaterials.

  • Work with collaborators on synthesis, writing reports, and analysis.

  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.

  • Regular lab maintenance, helium/nitrogen refills, taking care of instruments.

  • Publishing data in high-impact journals, participate in grant writing, and preparing reports for the funding agency.

Other Requirements:

  • Grant funded position for the period of March 15, 2024-to February 28, 2026

  • Earliest start date is June 15, 2024.

  • Position may require evening and/or weekend hours.

  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.

  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Salary: $55,000/annual
