Research Project Description: Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are becoming quite common in today’s world. However, when it comes to AI and language, some languages (e.g., English) are a lot more supported than others (e.g., Arabic). In the Computational Approaches to Modeling Language (CAMeL) Lab at NYUAD, we work on bridging the gap for Arabic (in its Standard and dialectal forms). We have a number of projects on AI and Language (aka Natural Language Processing, NLP). There are a number of projects in the lab that vary from automatic spelling correction to machine translation and chatbots. Responsibilities of the Position:

We are looking for applicants who want to become AI experts with a focus on natural language processing in general, and of the Arabic language specifically. The applicants will work on a specific project under the direction of Prof. Habash; and in collaboration with other lab members (at the beginning). The work will include analysis of the problem we are solving, reading up on related literature, designing computational solutions, implementing and validating solutions, writing tech reports and papers in conferences about the work done, and attending conferences to present said work.

Essential Qualifications:

The applicants must come with strong computer programming skills (BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering is ideal). Proficient programming skills in Python, Javascript, and any other programming languages. They need to speak, read and write English very well. Their Arabic should be native and very proficient. The applicant must be a team player; must be committed to the success of the project. Strong interest in languages in general is expected. Knowing multiple languages besides Arabic and English is a plus.

Preferred experience:

Work on teams; work on programming projects; work on AI or NLP projects; experience with neural models is a plus.
