Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for oversight of animal care attendant operations within the Shelter division including training of assigned staff, completion of project assignments, and assisting with the cleaning, maintenance, and sanitizing of kennels and associated equipment and ensuring food and water are provided to animals. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

Working location may rotate between Animal Care Services Main Campus at 4710 State Highway 151, San Antonio, TX 78227, and satellite city-run facilities in various locations within city limits.

Work Hours

Rotating shifts between 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday - Sunday; weekend and holiday availability required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Communicates pertinent information to ensure efficient daily operations to department staff members and other division leads.

  • Assists supervisor with managing the day-to-day operations, training staff, completing evaluations of new employees and completing projects as assigned.

  • Ensures the staff's daily assigned tasks are performed and policies and protocols are enforced or assists as needed. Aids supervisor with creating and/or implementing new/efficient procedures.

  • Demonstrates excellent customer relations with internal and external customers.

  • Assists with feeding, cleaning, laundering, and other daily tasks.

  • Works with team supervisor to coordinate issues/concerns regarding inventory of animals, equipment, and supplies.

  • Ensures updates of animal information in Chameleon database are completed.

  • Confirms accurate screenings of animals for disposition, verifying with identification tags, and updates pick-up orders information.

  • Reports any health or behavioral problems displayed by animals to supervisor immediately.

  • Assists customers in finding owned, adoptable or transferable animals.

  • Transports animals to and from adoption events, rescue locations, and the Animal Emergency Room Clinic, which frequently includes lifting and carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds and assisting with team lifts for animals over 50 pounds.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency)

  • Two (2) years of animal handling experience

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of customer service experience.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of animal care and feeding procedures

  • Knowledge of humane animal handling and housing

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and methods used to handle vicious animals

  • Skill in safely handling animals including those with unknown

temperament

  • Skill in the use of tools used to restrain and transport animals

  • Ability to learn procedures related to sanitizing kennels, equipment, disposition of animals, and general animal handling

  • Ability to learn pertinent Local and State laws

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively

  • Ability to adhere to disease management safety protocols

  • Ability to learn Chameleon database

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and City staff

  • Ability to quickly recognize and interpret animal signaling

  • Ability to work with frequent interruption and changes in priorities

  • Ability to coach, train, and provide technical assistance to others

  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations

  • Ability to work in an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to temperature variations, infectious diseases, and hostile animals
