GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Large Carnivore Biologist to manage large carnivore conflicts in the Jackson Region, including investigating human/large carnivore conflicts and monitoring large carnivore populations

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Investigating and working to reduce human-carnivore conflicts by working with livestock producers, private landowners, businesses, agencies, and the public.

  • Conduct damage claim investigations to determine the cause of death in livestock and wildlife and recommend damage compensation when appropriate.

  • Capturing and handling black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, and gray wolves. Inventory and monitor large carnivore populations; working with federally threatened/endangered species.

  • Using controlled drugs, firearms, and explosives. Collecting data and keeping records.

  • Conducting aerial observation flights for large carnivores. Using radio telemetry equipment for locating marked animals. Data analysis and report writing.

  • Assisting law enforcement personnel with investigations of wildlife violations. Investigate incidents of human injury caused by wildlife.

  • Conduct information and education programs.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology, or closely related field, or experience working with the public, monitoring wildlife, and capturing and handling wildlife.

**Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Ability to work long and irregular hours under some adverse conditions and extreme public scrutiny.

  • Skills will be required to use firearms, controlled pharmaceuticals, capture equipment, ATVs, horses, 4-wheel drive vehicles, radio equipment, radio telemetry, and power equipment and tools.

  • The position will require working with dangerous animals in remote settings. Knowledge to participate in data collection, analysis, and report writing.

  • Will require independent decision-making ability and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Will require computer and data analysis skills.

  • The position will require heavy lifting and excellent physical condition.

  • Knowledge of the ecology of large carnivores and other wild animals.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, ATV's, riding and packing horses for backcountry work, and flying in fixed-wing and helicopters in mountain conditions.

  • Working in inclement and severe weather conditions.

  • On-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Working alone in remote, backcountry locations.

  • The position will require heavy lifting and excellent physical condition.
