SUMMARY: Position provides the leadership and expertise required to coordinate and direct all inmate service-oriented functions at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center (NRADC).

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.   • The incumbent coordinates and provides inmate services in the Community Corrections environment.

  • Supervises the development and delivery of inmate services at the NRADC to include substance abuse intervention, life skills training, job services assistance, parenting, and educational services.

  • Directs and coordinates the development of policies and procedures related to the recruitment and utilization of volunteer services within NRADC.

  • Reviews criminal and social histories of inmates and recommends/coordinates special counseling and/or program participation.

  • Monitors inmate program progress and serves as a consultant to staff providing inmate training, counseling, and case management.

  • Conducts individual and group counseling and training to include substance abuse intervention, anger management, education, and other life skills training.

  • Maintains inmate management records and files.

  • Provides Correctional Officer training and consultation.

  • Performs other duties as may be directed.

Typical Qualifications

Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • Combination of education and experience that would enable candidate to perform required duties; and,

  • A bachelor’s degree in social work, behavioral science, or counseling in a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5) years substance abuse and/or mental health or rehabilitation counseling is required; and,

  • Two (2) years supervisory experience in correctional, forensic, or mental health treatment is also desired.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work irregular hours;

  • Ability to analyze diverse social histories and to recommend remedial education, intervention, and training programs to correct/modify problem behavior;

  • Knowledge of substance abuse intervention and counseling methodology and techniques;

  • Ability to conduct individual and/or group counseling and training sessions;

  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and techniques;

  • Thorough knowledge of community-based resources available to assist in implementation of inmate programs;

  • Knowledge to train and serve as a consultant to sworn officers and civilian staff with inmate case management responsibilities; and,

  • The ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and other community entities is essential.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • A valid state Driver’s License is required;

  • Must maintain a telephone for emergency contact; and,

  • Must be Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC).

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is light to medium work that requires standing and walking for short periods of time, picking up and moving boxes as needed (10lbs to 25lbs), pushing, pulling, grasping, bending, stooping, reaching, and crouching as needed. Effective vocal communication, hearing and vision is required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Majority of the work is indoors. Regularly exposed to those convicted of or charged with felons and misdemeanants, all susceptible to violent and/or unpredictable behavior. Work involves some degree of risk to personal safety in an inherently stressful environment.
