The Histology Technician will research and perform skilled, administrative, and managerial support in research. Plans and directs certain phases in a research project.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty. Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of laboratory work or related experience

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be organized, be able to pay attention to detail, and understand written and verbal instructions.

  • Requires the ability to work well in a team setting and take instructions from supervisor.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, faculty, staff, and students.

  • Above average fine motor skills.

  • Self-motivated/self-starter worker.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any biological sciences or relevant science field with focus on histology research.

  • 1 year of experience in a histology laboratory to include working with microtomes, tissue processors, and special stains.

Responsibilities:

  • HISTOLOGY LABORATORY PROCEDURES : Receives tissue submissions entering the histology laboratory. Performs routine and advanced histology preparation of fixed, paraffin embedded or frozen animal tissues for microscopic evaluation, which includes processing, embedding, cutting, H&E or special staining, and cover-slipping microscope slides for research studies. Works with tissues from different animals, mainly mouse. Works with various other samples as well (organoids, wood, pollen, sometimes samples too tiny to see). Plans and directs certain phases in a research project. Carries out research problems . Makes and records observations and measurements. Orders and receives supplies, prepares solutions and stains, washes glassware, and performs general lab cleaning and organizing of the lab. Prepares and collects chemical solutions used in various pieces of equipment as well as collects and processes chemical solutions for waste pick up or recycling. Provides training as needed; works closely with faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students to implement histological procedures to accomplish research objectives. Uses different laboratory equipment to do tissue processing , embedding, staining, cover slipping , cryosectioning of tissue needed for different kind of research projects. Assists in trouble shooting and performing different staining protocols for evaluation of different animal tissue based on requirements for a particular research project. Assists in developing and optimizing protocols for cutting tissue for a particular research project. Uses computer and digital scanner for scanning the histology slides needed for interpretation for a research project. Keeps track of ordering laboratory supplies, places orders, marks off the cases in iLab submission , checks the price estimate for any research submission, organizes the research cases etc. Writes and/or edits for publication scientific materials requiring academic knowledge if needed.

  • EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE : Cleans and maintains quality control on equipment such as microtomes, embedding units, tissue processors, cryostats, and solvent recycler. Performs other duties as assigned.
