Job Summary

The Road, Bridge, and Stormwater Maintenance Division seeks an Equipment Operator to join our Stormwater Maintenance Team. The position drives trucks, tractors, and other vehicles to advance projects relating to maintenance activities within the county’s roadside swales.

Essential Functions

• Drives trucks, tractors, and other vehicles to advance projects relating to maintenance and construction activities for various divisions; maneuvers in and around traffic, parked cars, crew workers, equipment, and other obstacles; obeys all traffic laws and safety guidelines; monitors the immediate environment and work area to ensure the safety of the operator, other workers, the equipment, and the public.

• Drives single, tandem, and tri-axle dump trucks or brush trucks to transport and haul materials between original and final destinations for use in maintenance and construction projects; positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or dumping of materials; secures all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load; operates dumping mechanism to dump materials at appropriate locations; operates truck and dumping mechanism simultaneously to spread materials along prescribed path to required specifications.

• Operates tractors and tractor-mounted mowing equipment to mow/maintain rights-of-way, and other County property, including operation of side-arm, bush hogs, and rear-mounted mowers, scouts path for and removes rocks, debris, and other obstacles that may cause damage to the equipment, property, or the public; determines proper settings and adjusts mowing/raking equipment for desired height and trajectory.

• Drives special purpose trucks with mounted tanks to transport and distribute water, fuel, oil, or other liquids for use in maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects; determines proper settings and adjusts spraying mechanisms to distribute desired amounts of liquids for both informal and controlled applications; operates flusher/water truck to rinse debris from streets and apply water to construction sites to reduce dust levels; operates spraying mechanism on median and Right of Way for watering operations; operates asphalt distributor to apply oil along prescribed path for street construction before pavement of streets.

• Operates bobcat, backhoe-mounted loader, loaders, and skid steers of similar size to load and move gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials for smaller projects and amounts; utilizes bobcat to clear land or debris.

• Operates asphalt roller to flatten and compress dirt, gravel, asphalt, and other materials.

• Utilizes asphalt patching truck to make repairs to existing streets and paved surfaces by filling potholes, cracks, and other deformities; drives truck to work location and positions vehicle to allow for optimum delivery of asphalt; utilizes dumping mechanisms to apply specified amount of hot asphalt to desired area; operates spraying mechanism to aim and distribute a fine stream of asphalt along cracks in the pavement; utilizes rakes, shovels, and other tools to spread and seal asphalt manually; marks newly repaired pavement as appropriate.

• Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation before beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; secures vehicle after use.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs basic and semi-skilled labor as appropriate to assist in the completion of maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects; picks up paper, limbs, and other debris; uses hand tools and operates motorized tools as necessary to complete assigned tasks; and manually loads, moves, and arranges materials.

• May be responsible for maintaining an assigned area such as maintaining sections of Collier County.

• Cleans and maintains vehicles or equipment in operating order.

• Assists other coworkers as needed.

• Uses computers, tablets, or hand-held devices to record information and enter data and pictures related to tasks.

• May perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles used.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

• Six (6) months of related experience.

• Fingerprinting required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License with any applicable endorsement(s) to drive a County vehicle as provided in CMA 5805.

• Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.

• Must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire.

  • Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.

  • Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
