Job Description

The Chemist I position within the API Development and Support organization synthesizes and packages analytical reference standards, performs crystallization / milling studies, conducts experimentation / testing to support process safety hazard assessments, and provides general synthetic chemistry support for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing.

Essential Functions:

  • Works in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment to meet internal and external customers’ needs.

  • Contributes to the synthesis and packaging of analytical reference standards.

  • Supports API crystallization and milling studies while working closely with process chemists, process engineers and analytical chemists.

  • Conducts calorimetry testing (RC1, ARSST, ARC, etc.) in support of API process safety hazard assessments.

  • Works effectively with development chemists, analytical chemists, Engineering, and Safety to contribute to the scale-up and manufacturing of APIs.

  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives for manufacturing processes.

  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Remains compliant with company, site, and safety policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education/Experience: BS/BA in Chemistry

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Some organic and analytical chemistry lab experience, preferably in a research lab setting (academic or industry). Understanding of the fundamental aspects of organic and analytical chemistry. Basic understanding of analytical techniques such as IR, MS, NMR, and HPLC. Ability to effectively interact with others. Desire to solve technically complex problems.

Skills/Competencies: Self-starter with strong work ethic, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to successfully manage workload on various projects and contribute to team investigations. Ability to work well in a fast-paced team setting. Should be able to complete simple to moderate lab tasks with limited supervision.

Working Conditions:

Typical laboratory conditions. Employees are required to wear eye protection and lab coats while in the lab area. Occasional handling of potent compounds or hazardous chemicals may require the use of additional PPE. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulated workplace. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 lbs.
