The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for an Assistant Research Scientist to serve as a member of the Center for Translational Cancer Research team. Job Description Summary:

The Assistant Research Scientist will perform independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Will perform research studies and analysis in the areas of drug discovery including small molecule chemistry, high-throughput chemical screening, toxicity profiling, and multi-modal data analysis using AI/ML.

  • Appropriate PhD

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Responsibility and organization a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more programming languages (Python or R) is required in addition to a high level of proficiency in multiple operating systems (Win11, WSL2, Ubuntu).

  • Demonstrated proficiency using professional software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe CC, GraphPad Prism, ImageJ/Fiji, Cell Profiler).

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Contract Research - Perform biochemical, image-based, and flow-based assays between the TAMU-HTS Facility and investigator initiated/contract research projects. Basic lab skills (pipetting, mammalian cell culture, etc..) and knowledge of lab automation will be required (with some on-the-job training). Management of multiple concurrent projects and multi-investigator teams will similarly be required.

  • Internal Infrastructure/Research Projects - Establish physical infrastructure in support of small molecule chemistry efforts in the adjacent TAMU-CRB Chemistry Facility. This will include duties in running in-house synthetic and medicine chemistry projects in the small molecule and peptide therapeutics domain.

  • Data Analysis - Scientific evaluation of HTS data using a variety of open-source and in-house workflows developed using a variety of visual programming, coding, and scripting languages. All aspects of data analysis including design and execution of in vitro assays, biostats, routine data monitoring, the development and application of AI/ML analytical workflows to support drug discovery and precision medicine applications, and preparation/presentation of completed analysis to collaborators, stake holders and the publication of results in high quality peer reviewed journals.

  • Meetings - Weekly lab meetings and scheduled mentoring/progress meetings. Ad hoc meetings to present data to collaborators and stakeholders.

  • Writing - Professional writing protocols, manuscripts, and proposals. Maintenance of a lab notebook.
