What we want

The Assistant Director of Communications for Mays Business School is responsible for telling the compelling stories of Mays, overseeing all written content for marketing purposes, and acting as editor of two Mays magazine publications.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field.

  • Seven years as editor, in a communications role, or closely related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in AP style writing.

  • Exceptional grammar and writing skills in narrative, short form and press release formats.

  • Experience setting story direction and synthesizing complex ideas in written formats.

  • Ability to communicate ideas and concepts clearly and effectively. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong initiative, ability to bring fresh ideas, individual voice and enthusiasm to the team.

  • Ability to balance multiple, simultaneous priorities while meeting deadlines.

  • Exceptional time management skills.

  • Ability to work as a motivated self-starter.

  • Supervisory experience or experience editing and revising written content.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven years of experience working as an editor or writer in a communications or marketing team.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience delegating, delivering feedback, and meeting deadlines.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

Editing - Act as managing editor for Mays Business School magazine publications. Select stories and set story direction in collaboration with Mays leadership. Establish a written style guide for all Mays Business School communications to ensure key brand messages and excellent grammar/syntax are present across all platforms. Review and edit all written communications for the school, including social media posts, brochure content, digital advertising, and email communications.

Written Content Production - Develop a messaging strategy for how Mays talks about groundbreaking, technical research to public audience groups. Assist with brochure content creation for various departments and centers within the school as needed. Produce and manage content for the Mays research blog and podcast. Write articles for magazine publications and blog posts for smaller initiatives at Mays Business School.

Project Management - Coordinate third-party writers and set story direction, manage timelines, edits, approvals and spec sheets for articles in magazine publications. Collaborate with project managers and designers for full magazine production.

Press Releases - Write blog posts and press releases for significant events and initiatives at Mays Business School. Collaborate with Mays Business School and external stakeholders to promptly synthesize Mays’-related initiatives and success stories. Establish and communicate a process for press release communications across the school. Serve as primary media contact and appropriately respond to media requests. Collaborate with the university media team for press approvals.
