The School of Nursing at Old Dominion University invites qualified candidates to apply for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track nursing faculty position as an Associate Professor and Director of the Nursing Science Ph.D. Program. The start date for the position will be July 25, 2025.
The Director of the Nursing Science Ph.D. Program is the academic administrative officer responsible for the Nursing Science Ph.D. Program in the School of Nursing. The Program Director ensures that the standards and policies of the Graduate School, the University, and the School of Nursing (as applicable) are met, and further that the program achieves the highest standards for Ph.D. education outlined by national bodies in nursing education (e.g., the AACN ). The Program Director is responsible for facilitating the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the School of Nursing’s Nursing Science Ph.D. Program in addition to teaching.
The Program Director also works collaboratively with the School of Nursing Dean, Department Chairs, faculty, and staff in the School of Nursing. The Program Director collaborates with other Program Directors in the School of Nursing to coordinate course offerings and program planning and improvement. The Program Director sits on the Graduate Committee and works closely with collaborators to facilitate efficient and coordinated use of resources. The Program Director collaborates with the Directors of Student Services, Enrollment/Recruitment, and Marketing regarding Ph.D. student recruitment, admissions, enrollments, program evaluation, and student scholarships and financial aid and others to coordinate and enhance research activities of doctoral students, including grant submissions and administration.
Other responsibilities of the position include:
Participating with other administrators and faculty in strategic planning for Ph.D. nursing education.
Providing leadership for the ongoing review of the School of Nursing’s strategic plan relative to Ph.D. nursing education.
Coordinating, in collaboration with appropriate others, the systems for managing Ph.D. nursing course offerings, class schedules, student advising/mentorship, candidacy examinations, and proposal and dissertation committees.
Monitoring Ph.D. students’ programs of study and progression.
Teaching in the Ph.D. program and D.N.P. program, as needed.
Charing the Ph.D. Council and/or other committees essential to the Nursing Science Ph.D. Program.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
An earned doctorate in Nursing or a related field.
A current, unrestricted license as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or eligible for unrestricted licensure).
A current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
Eligibility for the rank of Associate Professor.
Ability to chair Ph.D. dissertations.
Knowledge of Ph.D. level teaching, curriculum development, and program implementation and evaluation.
Demonstrated leadership abilities, managerial skills, creativity, and the ability to make timely decisions, collaborate effectively, and be open to the ideas of others and to constructive feedback.
Knowledge of institutional and programmatic accreditation requirements and regulatory standards governing Ph.D. programs in Nursing.
Demonstrated expertise in nurse knowledge and clinical practice.
Demonstrated leadership and nursing education knowledge and skills.
Strong communication skills.
Functions as an effective, active, and collegial team member
Demonstrated computer skills using web-based applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
Competence in use of technology in teaching and distance learning.
Commitment to growth of diversity, equity and inclusion in and beyond the nurse anesthesia program and School of Nursing.
Scholarship to include professional presentations at the local, regional, national, and international levels, research, and publication and other scholarly manuscripts.
Preferred Qualifications
An earned D.N.Sc. or Ph.D. in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent and a nationally accredited nursing program.
Experience with graduate teaching, curriculum development, and program implementation and evaluation.
Evidence of success in an extramurally funded program of research and national recognition as a leader in the field.
Experience as a Program Director of a graduate nursing program.
Experience with virtual or distance teaching.
Experience with simulation in nursing education.
Service in professional organizations (e.g. membership and/or committee involvement).
Experience in teaching policymaking, leadership, and/or educational courses in health care.
