Description

Under direct supervision for Radiologic Specialist I, and under general supervision for Radiologic Specialist II, prepares and positions patients for a variety Computed Tomography (CT) exams, and the operational network management of the acquisition and electronic archiving of all modality image studies to produce diagnostic images for interpretation by a Radiologist.

Radiologic Specialist I is the entry, training level of the Radiologic Specialist series.

Radiologic Specialist II is the journey level of the Radiologic Specialist series. Incumbents have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience and perform their duties more independently in their respective specialty areas. Radiologic Specialist II will also assist in the training of student technologists and other imaging staff members as needed.

The ideal candidate will have Computed Tomography (CT) work experience and the ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes on call shifts.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Radiologic Specialist I: $41.35 - $54.23 hourly

Radiologic Specialist II: $45.62 - $55.45 hourly

EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible to receive an educational incentive of either 2.5%, for an Associate's degree, a 3.5%, for a Bachelor's degree or 5% for a post graduate degree that is not required to work in the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive pay depending upon operational needs and certification skills.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Extra Help, Temporary, and Intermittent vacancies for this and similar positions only within the Health Care Agency. There is currently one (1) regular vacancy, and one (1) anticipated intermittent position.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Radiologic Specialist I and Radiologic Specialist II are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: Friday, March 29, 2024

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares and positions patients for CT examinations according to approved modality protocols;

  • Cleans and maintains CT equipment, including routine preventative maintenance, and daily/weekly QA/QC;

  • Completes documentation required for CT examinations and billing process for each patient encounter utilizing all Radiology department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;

  • Schedules patients and coordinates CT examinations;

  • Transports patients to and from the imaging departments when necessary;

  • Shields patients according to radiation safety procedures,

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can be obtained by either:

  • Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related; OR

  • Graduation from a program accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in sonography or vascular technology; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in any major and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience.

In addition to the above for Radiology Specialist I, the Radiology Specialist II requires a Minimum of (2) years of experience (NOTE: This requirement cannot be satisfied by the requirements listed above) performing the duties in:

A. Two (2) of the following modalities/essential area of expertise: X-Ray/Fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography, Electronic Medical Record, Interventional Radiology, Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and PACS Administrator.

  • OR -

B. One (1) of the following modalities/essential area of expertise: Echocardiography or Ultrasound.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

CPR certification.

Must posses a valid Radiologic Technologist Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health/Radiologic Health Branch.

Must posses a valid Fluoroscopy Permit issued by the State of California Department of Public Health/Radiologic Health Branch.

Desired:

  • Computed Tomography (CT) work experience, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification.

Supplemental information:

Duties are performed in an acute care setting and include frequent lifting of and/or transportation of patients by wheelchair or gurney/stretcher; moving imaging equipment to patient’s bedside for portable studies and standing for extended periods of time; possible continued exposure to x-radiation scatter; and exposure to various types of infectious diseases, blood, body tissues or excretions.

Shift assignments include Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital and day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours. Standby/Callback shift assignments are a requirement of Computed Tomographers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of:

  • Anatomy, physiology, physics and medical terminology as it relates to the imaging modality.

  • Exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric and adult patients.

  • Adherence to HIPAA regulations.

  • Documentation required for exam billing processes.

  • General imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting.

    Skill in:

  • Positioning patients for CT image acquisition.

  • Shielding patients per ALARA.

  • Recognizing and evaluating projected CT images for clarity, content and scope of examination.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Perform routine and complex CT studies.

  • Exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining CT procedures to patients.

  • Provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.

  • Establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • To clean and maintain CT equipment and preventative maintenance.

WRITTEN EXAM – 100%: A job-related written exam will be conducted to evaluate and compare candidates’ radiological, medical, CT, and interpersonal relationships knowledge. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list. Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
