Empire State University seeks a full-time Basic Needs Coordinator (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) with experience assisting students facing non-academic challenges such as being un-housed, food insecure, or experiencing financial distress. The Basic Needs Coordinator will report to the Student Success division's Director of Health & Wellness. The coordinator is responsible for responding to students requesting support, being knowledgeable of community agencies local to where that student may live, and connecting them with local agencies to assist as needed. This position is also responsible for managing SUNY Empire's laptop loan program, emergency grants, virtual food pantry, and providing laptop computers to students in need.

The successful candidate will be committed to student success by supporting SUNY Empire students and ensuring they have information and access to local resources across the state. This person must be collaborative, independent, a self-starter, and able to work with diverse faculty, staff, and students.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Meet with students facing non-academic challenges.

  • Coordinates referrals to community agencies that provide students with basic needs such as housing, food, and financial support.

  • Manage emergency support for basic needs support, including food insecurity.

  • Manage virtual food pantry for students and coordinate emergency food purchases and deliveries.

  • Manage the laptop loan program, including maintaining accurate records of devices loaned out to students.

  • Collaborates with Career Planning to certify eligibility for internship basic need support.

  • Establish communication plans to market services.

  • Track demographic and trend data related to basic needs support.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • A minimum of one year of experience working with people facing personal challenges and navigating resources.

  • Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to prioritize and work in a remote environment.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Active listening and critical thinking skills.

  • Proven commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Social Work, or a relevant field related to key responsibilities.

  • Related work experience in a higher education setting.

  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.

  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Special Information:

  • This position may involve occasional travel.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

  • SUNY Empire provides employees with robust remote and flexible work options to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff in a dispersed work environment. University locations that may be considered include Saratoga Springs, Rochester and Selden, NY.

    Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL3 / $56,00-$60,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
